Boys basketball roundup: First-half surge rallies Bulldogs, 79-71

Dec. 29—PERHAM — The Paynesville boys basketball team came home with the third-place trophy from the Grand8 Holiday Tournament on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs beat Border West 79-71.

Key to the win was an 11-point swing just before the end of the first half that saw Paynesville come from being down four points to up by seven, according to Bulldogs head coach Rick Hendrickson.

Paynesville got its lead to as much as 10, but Border West got it down to two at one point. The Bulldogs got the defensive tops they needed to hold on, Hendrickson said.

Bryce VanderBeek had a big game for Paynesville, finishing with 14 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and five blocked shots. Max Athmann contributed 21 points and Eli Nelson had 17 for the Bulldogs.

Andrew Walker-Hannemann had 18 points and Clint Determan added 16 points and seven rebounds for Border West.

Perham defeated Sauk Centre in the championship, 67-40.

Paynesville's next game is 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at Royalton.

DeAndre Holloway helped Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg dominate St. James, scoring 40 points as the Fighting Saints took home the CVB Holiday Classic title in Windom.

Holloway, listed at 6-7, also notched 15 rebounds, five blocks and four steals.

Hunter Kallstrom and Isaac Rudningen each scored 17 points. Rudningen added 17 assists and Kallstrom added 12 rebounds.

Windom beat Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 91-78 in the third-place game.

KMS plays host to Lac qui Parle Valley at 6 p.m. Tuesday at KMS High School in Kerkhoven.

Dawson-Boyd took home the championship of the 3 Coops Shoot for 3 Holiday Tournament in Rushford.

The Blackjacks built a 43-20 lead over host Rushford-Peterson.

Brayson Boike had 25 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots for Dawson-Boyd. Keegon Wicht had 22 points and eight steals for the Blackjacks, who shot 47% from three-point range (9 of 19) and 58% overall (28 of 48). Wicht made 4 of 9 three-point attempts.

In the third-place game, Spring Grove defeated Higher Ground Academy 83-39.

Dawson-Boyd returns to Camden Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against MACCRAY in Clara City.

Minnewaska earned its first victory of the season in the first round of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Holiday Tournament at Howard Lake.

"Tenzen Dahl had 23 points and seven rebounds, Alex Panitzke added 13 points and three assists and Hunter Kloos contributed 10 points and four steals to the Lakers' victory.

Sonaa Taera and Jordan Moss each had 10 points for Hope Academy, located in Minneapolis.

In the other tournament game, HLWW beat East Central 73-57.
