Boys basketball roundup: Paynesville secures section win against Litchfield

Dec. 2—PAYNESVILLE — Facing a potential Section 3AA-North opponent in Litchfield, Paynesville led 35-24 at halftime and never looked back in a 63-51 boys basketball victory on Thursday.

The Bulldogs' Max Athmann led all scorers with 23 points. Eli Nelson followed up with 10 points.

The Dragons' top scorer was Tucker Liestman with 16 points, followed by 10 apiece from Jack McCann and Jacob Dietel.

MACCRAY opened the season with a 50-44 victory over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at the Wabasso Tournament.

Lucas Post led the Wolverines with 15 points, four steals and three assists. Jordan Warne added 12 points and seven rebounds and Nathan Wieberdink had 11 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and four blocked shots.

In other games at Wabasso, Lakeview beat Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 86-38.and Wabasso played Cleveland.

Redwood Valley rallied from a 33-32 halftime deficit to earn the victory at Montevideo.

"They basically got hot in the second half," Montevideo head coach Derek Weber said.

Weber said his Thunder Hawks need to work on taking care of the ball.

"We graduated a lot of seniors, so it's a pretty fresh team," he said. "Tonight was going to be a learning experience. I think they understand now they're going to have to grow and continue to learn the game. We learned to do a better job of taking care of the basketball."

Redwood Valley hit 15 three-pointers and were led by Elway Berg's 20 points.

Gannon Reidinger and Cooper Dack each had 14 points and Mason Jerve added 13 for Montevideo.

Dawson-Boyd shot 58% from the field to nab a Camden Conference win over host Ortonville.

Leading the Blackjacks' offense was Brayson Boike. He had 29 points on 13 of 16 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds, dished out four assists and had four steals.

Keegon Wicht added 18 points and seven assists. Drew Hjelmeland was a rebound away from a double-double with 15 points and nine boards.
