The boys basketball teams from Jefferson and Summerfield surprised some people – and maybe themselves – by getting off to fast starts this season.

Jefferson was 3-0 in the return of Corey Wiley as head coach and Summerfield was 2-0 heading into Tuesday’s clash.

When the final horn sounded, Summerfield was the only one still boasting a perfect record.

The Bulldogs had four players hit double figures in scoring during a 57-40 victory.

Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler was thrilled with the win.

“I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t,” when asked if he was surprised that his team was 3-0. “But I knew in my heart when you have people who want to be here and are willing to buy in, that you can find great success in that.”

Summerfield found great success from long range, knocking down eight 3-pointers to just one for its host.

“This is a huge win for us,” Schiffler said. “Our guys stepped up and got tougher as the game went on. Every time they made a run, we were able to knock down a shot.”

Wiley said shooting woes shot down his team.

“We really struggled from the field tonight, shooting 28 percent,” he said. “Our struggles at the line continue tonight. We shot 50 percent. Lots for credit to Summerfield. They played really well, shot well.”

Tyler Dafoe led the Bulldogs with 17 points, Brody St. John scored 12, Teddy Gault 11 and Bryce Kalb 10.

Kalb and Brendan Myshock snared 5 rebounds each.

Eastin Kegley paced Jefferson with 16 points.

“Eastin Kegley is a heck of a player,” Schiffler said.

Bedford called timeout Tuesday with the score tied with 13 seconds left to design the final play. Bedford coach Jordan Bollin called a play where Hollinger gets the ball, but normally gives off to a teammate.

“He said, ‘But I’m keeping it,”” Bollin said. “I said, ‘Yeah, you’re keeping it.’”

Hollinger kept the ball and scored the winning basket inside with 1.7 seconds left.

“In the fourth quarter Andrew just grabbed the game and dominated,” Bollin said of his senior, who finished with 11 rebounds and scored 13 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Bedford, which lost its first 10 games last season, is off to a 2-0 start and both are Southeastern Conference Red wins. Simon Eighmey added a career-high 13 points.
