BOYS BB: Cass stars Good, Chambers lead big win over Caston

Feb. 15—WALTON — The combination of Tyson Good and Luke Chambers were too much for Caston Tuesday night.

The Kings' dynamic duo dominated in a 58-29 win over the Comets.

Chambers had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and Good had 20 points, five steals and four assists as the Kings improved to 12-7.

The Comets (7-13) had a strong start in jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the first four minutes. But the Kings ended the first quarter on a 13-0 run which included three straight 3-pointers by Good followed by a dunk at the buzzer to give Cass a 17-11 lead.

Good made two more 3-pointers at the end of the second quarter, one at the buzzer to give the Kings a 32-17 lead at halftime. He finished 5-of-6 shooting from 3 and 7-of-11 from the field overall.

Chambers scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Kings built a 46-26 lead after three as they went on to win by 29.

"I thought when we went down early Tyson kind of put it on his shoulders and he's done that several times this year," Lewis Cass coach Kyle Johnson said. "He just did a great job lifting the energy on our team and in the gym. That was huge. And Tyson probably could have scored the same amount in the second half but became a facilitator and I really appreciate when he's able to put both hats on.

"The second half, even late in the first half, Luke Chambers does what he does. I'm sure he ended up with a double-double. He's just really strong. We need those two guys to play well, and I thought the good part about that tonight is six other guys around them got some minutes and we're trying to feel out some things. We are going to have to play eight-plus guys if you want to do something special at the end of the year. So being able to get a few minutes out of everybody was huge for us tonight."

Keaton Lewellen and Haden McClain added six points apiece for Lewis Cass. LJ Hillis and Owen Lowe chipped in two apiece.

The Kings' defense was particularly dominant in the second half in holding the Comets to nine points over the final two quarters.

"We're definitely trying to throw a few different looks at them occasionally which is something that's kind of out of my realm," Johnson said. "But when they locked down in the second half, once we got to a point where we got the lead, we knew they would have to push a little bit to try to get back in it. We had a good man-to-man night. Only giving up 29 points against a team that can really shoot like that, there's much to be said about their efforts defensively.

"As you go down the stretch, coaches get better and better. They scout everything, they know everything you do. So you've got to try to catch them off guard. It's a game of chess and I don't necessarily think I won that chess game tonight, Luke and Tyson took care of business, but I think there's some different looks you've got to give a team to see if they can adjust on a couple quick change of defense possessions."

Talon Zeider scored 11 points to lead Caston. Cain Schanlaub scored six. Caleb Stinson had four points, six assists and two steals. Colby Pugh and Grant Yadon added three points apiece and Rowan Jellison chipped in two.

"I thought we came out ready to go," Caston coach Carl Davis said. "I thought we did a good job of getting some easy buckets early. It was a feast or famine early for us, it seemed like we either got a really good look or we turned the ball over and gave them an opportunity. So obviously we've got to be ready for that and clean it up. Defensively I thought in the first half we executed what we wanted to do pretty well, we gave up those second-chance points though and we gave up those transition points. They hit some shots in the first half to get that halftime lead. But really I was pretty happy with how the guys competed defensively in the first half and some of the things we took away and were able to take them out of. But obviously Chambers especially on the offensive boards just killed us in the second half. He kind of took over in the paint in the second half and that allowed them to stretch their lead out."

Caston played Cass to within 60-47 on Nov. 29 in the county tournament in Fulton. Davis said both teams have improved since then.

"We've continued to get better. It's kind of hard to tell with the results sometimes," Davis said. "It's important for them to understand those improvements and see those improvements on film. A game like this gives you an opportunity to go back and look at film from earlier in the season and it's amazing watching our first game against Cass to now. I know the result wasn't what we wanted tonight but we definitely made some improvements in areas that we've been working on and we have to continue to do that moving forward. There's times when we have a quarter where we really put things together and then the next quarter it's not the same deal. A lot of inconsistency right now and that's something we continue to stress and continue to work on and that's something we have a couple weeks here to refine and get better at and this group is going to keep pushing and keep growing."

The Comets were held to just eight field goals for the game including just one in the second half on a 3-pointer by Zeider. They lost the rebounding battle 27-17 and the turnover battle 20-13.

"They did a really good job of taking us out of what we wanted to do and anytime you're playing against a team coached by coach Johnson, they're going to do a really good job of pressuring you and making it really tough to finish around the rim," Davis said. "I think they did an outstanding job of contesting everything and making it tough."
