Boys Best of the Week: Cardington baseball enjoys hot streak week

Cardington's baseball team got hot last week, winning all four of its games.

The Pirates started with a 10-9 victory over Mount Gilead as the Indians tried to rally with three runs in the seventh inning before coming up short.

For Cardington, Nate Hickman hit two doubles and a single for three RBI, while Dillon Minturn added three singles and three RBI, and Merek McClure and Wyatt Wade knocked doubles. For the Indians, Paul Butterman tripled and singled for three RBI, while Nick Garvey doubled and singled for three RBI, and Carson VanHoose tripled.

In the second rivalry game, Cardington again held off MG 7-5. Minturn gave up just one earned run with eight hits, a walk and four strikeouts. Hickman hit a late home run plus a double to end with three RBI as Minturn scored three runs and Eli Huffman had two singles. For Mount Gilead, Carter Kennon went 6-and-two-thirds innings with seven hits, four walks, four earned runs and six strikeouts. VanHoose and Garvey both managed a pair of hits with Garvey picking up five RBI.

In another close encounter, the Pirates defeated Columbus Academy 6-5. Silas Horton and McClure combined for a five-hitter with one earned run, four walks and two strikeouts. Hickman doubled and singled; Denton Garrison doubled; A.J. Hall singled three times; and McClure singled twice.

Cardington also blasted Mansfield Christian 15-5. Garrison doubled and singled; Minturn doubled; Wade and McClure singled three times; and Kaiden Beach and Hickman singled twice. Wade, Warren Garrison, Joe Denney and Logan Reynolds all pitched for the Pirates, allowing four hits, four walks and four strikeouts.

Here are some other highlights over the last week with area boys spring sports teams and athletes:

» Like the Pirates, Northmor enjoyed a winning week.

In a 10-2 victory over Mount Gilead, Max Lower homered and singled for three runs, while Grant Bentley tripled and singled for three runs and three RBI, and Garrett Corwin doubled and singled. Matthew Kearns and Andrew Armrose singled twice as Bentley and Jack Sears threw a combined one-hitter with five walks and 10 strikeouts. Butterman doubled for MG's only hit.

Northmor handled Elgin 15-6 with Drew Hammond allowing eight hits, four walks and eight strikeouts over five innings and Sears pitching the last two in relief. Lower was 3-for-3 and Garrett Corwin 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kearns singled twice, and Bentley scored four runs. For Elgin, Brody Wood and Isaac Dillon doubled, and Keaton Hall singled twice.

The Golden Knights capped it off with a 15-4 win over Crestline. Griffin Workman and Sears allowed five hits, five walks and six strikeouts. Armrose doubled and finished with four RBI. Corwin scored three runs. Workman singled twice and scored three times. Kearns produced three RBI.

» Highland's Blake Jodrey struck out 12 and only permitted two River Valley baserunners to reach third base in an 8-0 win. Kort Sears had three hits, and Rider Minnick and Hayden Kline had two for the Scots.

» Elgin rolled to a 16-3 win over Upper Scioto Valley with Stephen Castillo pitching a five-inning three-hitter with six walks and six strikeouts. Hall scored three times with two hits, while Breckin Dugan had two hits, and Brody and Ben Wood both scored three runs.

» Aaron Krebehenne registered two hits with a double in North Union's 10-0 loss to Indian Lake. In an 8-2 loss to the Lakers, Evan Hoffer and Tyler Krebehenne doubled for the Wildcats.

» Marion Harding managed just two hits in a rain-shortened 8-3 loss to Olentangy Berlin

» Westerville North won the 16-team Mount Gilead Invitational in track and field over the weekend with 121 points, while Mount Vernon was second at 113, Mount Gilead third at 106, Highland fifth at 53.5, Elgin 11th at 21, Pleasant 12th at 17, Northmor 13th at 15.5 and Cardington 16th with 2.

Winning events from the area were Elgin's Cy Starcher in the 100-meter dash in 11.01 and 200 in 22.58, Mount Gilead's 4x100 relay in 45.16 and 4x200 relay in 1:34.03 and Highland's Caden Holtrey in the shot put at 46-4.5 and Austin Grandstaff in the pole vault at 11-0.

Runners-up were Mount Gilead's Michael Snopik in the 1600 at 4:22.85, Parker Bartlett at 10:12.74 and its 4x110 shuttle hurdle relay in 1:06.39, Highland's Joel Roberts in the high jump at 6-0 and Pleasant's Hudson Warner in the long jump at 20-5.25.

Taking third were Northmor's Lucas Weaver in the 800 at 2:03.22, Mount Gilead's Garrett Lamb-Hart in the 110 hurdles at 15.87, Owen High in the high jump at 5-10 and the 4x800 team in 8:39.96, and Highland's 110 shuttle hurdles team at 1:09.58.

Ending fourth were Highland's Nicholas Smith in the discus at 119-7.5 and Mount Gilead's Logan High in the 100 at 11.35, Snopik in the 800 at 2:03.7, Will Baker in the 1600 at 4:38.24, Ethan Kemp in the 3200 at 10:22.59 and the 4x400 squad at 3:30.69.

Finishing fifth were Highland's Jay Melchiori in the 110 hurdles at 16.5 and 300 hurdles at 44.26 and the 4x100 team in 46.64, Pleasant's 4x110 shuttle hurdles crew in 1:11.38 and Mount Gilead's Aaron Gannon in the 800 at 2:08.43.

Claiming sixth were MG's Matthew Bland in the 400 at 54.12, Lamb-Hart in the 300 hurdles at 44.54 and Wyatt Harriman in the pole vault at 10-0, Pleasant's Warner in the 110 hurdles at 16.76 and Will Lichtenberger in the 3200 in 10:28.34, Elgin's 4x200 team in 1:39.31, Highland's 4x400 relay in 3:42.34 and Northmor's Duston Sanders in the shot put at 39-9.5.

Going seventh were Mount Gilead's Bradley Butcher in the 100 at 11.74, Jonathan Miller in the 200 at 23.72 and Troy Likens in the discus at 116-2, Highland's Mason Duncan in the 400 at 54.76, Darren Styer in the pole vault at 10-0 and the 4x800 unit at 9:01.4, Elgin's 4x100 relay in 47.14, Northmor's Weaver in the 1600 at 4:46.19, Gavin Miller in the 110 hurdles at 17.75, the 4x200 team in 1:40.49 and Connor Radojcsics in the pole vault at 10-0 and Cardington's Jason Bockbrader in the high jump at 5-8.

Finishing eighth were Mount Gilead's Quade Harris in the 200 at 24.02, Pleasant's Warner in the 300 hurdles at 44.91 and the 4x200 team in 1:41.72, and Northmor's Miller in the high jump at 5-8.
