High School Wrestling: Immokalee girls take regional title; Palmetto Ridge, Barron Collier and First Baptist boys win districts

For one program, it was the expectation. For another, unchartered territory.

The Class 3A-District 8 boys wrestling meet and the Class 1A-Region 3 girls wrestling tournament were held at Palmetto Ridge High School on Saturday.

The Bears came out on top for the boys, while Immokalee broke new ground by winning the girls' regional title and sending four wrestlers to the states.

With six girls competing on Saturday, Immokalee head coach Filiberto Gorosquieta did not entertain the possibility of winning the team title.

He told his wrestlers to meet their individual goals and qualify for states — four of them did, with three reaching championship bouts.

That success allowed them to beat defending champion Fort Myers for the trophy.

"We weren’t worried about winning anything, but it is what it is," Gorosquieta said. "You do you job and you get first place – it’s a good feeling."

The team lost two of its wrestlers to injury early in the season, but it gave the group motivation, according to Gorosquieta.

The team is bonded like a family, junior Naomi Sylvestre said.

"Seeing you and your teammates just succeed at every level — I think that’s absolutely great," she said. 'And people are coming up to me, like, "'You’re team is doing great,' and I find it amazing because that shows like we’re together as a family and we’re winning it together."

Sylvestre won the title at 120 pounds, pinning her opponent after 2:55. It was an important rebound for her a week after a disappointment at districts.

"She put in the work," Gorosquieta said. "She deserved."

First Baptist eighth grader Hailee Moder came into the tournament as Southwest Florida's highest placing returning wrestler after finishing as a state runner up last year.

Moder won her first regional title after getting the fall after 3:27 in her title bout at 115 pounds.

The key for her throughout the tournament was trying not to get put on her back, but finding solutions if she did.

"I get put there like a lot, but I somehow I find a way out," she said.

Moder's older brothers, Jonathan and reigning state champion Christian, each won district titles on Friday. With states on the horizon, Moder has one goal in mind.

"Winning," she said.

Southwest Florida boasted several winners including Cypress Lake's Destine'e Thomas at 235 and Riverdale's Jazlyn Diaz at 110.

Barron Collier's Kiera Partello and Palmetto Ridge's Hayle Peck battled it out for the title at 100 pounds with Partello winning by 8-3 decision.

Naples' Regan Thomas finished as regional runner up last year, but came out on top in the bout at 105 pounds against South Fort Myers' Kayah Bonilla-Mas.

One of the best bouts of the tournament came at 140 pounds when Riverdale's Noelia Varela scored crucial points against Cypress Lake's Angelia Ortiz-Renteral just before time expired in the third period. She won the title with a 9-7 decision in overtime.

Genesis Turrubiartez and Brianice Silguero finished as runner ups for the Indians, qualifying them for states along with Sylvestre and Rebecca Aviles.

Gorosquieta believes this can have a ripple effect with the program.

"We had two state qualifiers last year, and I think that’s what motivated more girls to come out," he said.

Boys wrestling

Class 3A-District 8

The Bears faced some adversity, but the customary outcome came to fruition: another district championship.

The squad has been dealing with injuries and some wrestlers had to shift to different weights, head coach Blaine Ison said.

Ultimately, the Bears had five district champions and 12 of 14 wrestlers finished the day with a win.

“I want to really focus on the way we finished the last round,” Ison said. “I’m happy with our boys – the way they battled through some of the injuries.”

Reigning state champion Tyler Washburn pinned his opponent in the third period to take the title at 113 pounds.

At 138 pounds, Jean Valoria pinned his opponent in 40 seconds. Roman Garcia won at 170 pounds with a 13-4 major decision.

Austin Foye took the title at 285 after a medical forfeit canceled the title bout.

The tensest battle from the Bears came from Demetri Zertopoulis, who went down to the wire with Riverdale’s Christian Varela at 145 pounds.

Zertopoulis had been out with an elbow injury since December and still sports a large bandage on his arm.

He grinded out a win in ultimate overtime after 8:30 minutes.

“It feels good,” Zertopoulis said. “I’m used to those hard matches. It’s like my mindset – just keep going.”

Two Riverdale wrestlers reached the top of the podium – Zachary Balma at 132 pounds and Alexander Soto at 152.

Soto was runner up at districts, regionals and states last year with Palmetto Ridge’s Brennan Van Hoecke denying him each time. With Van Hoecke graduated, Soto has his sights set high.

“I’m hoping I can get the gold this year,” he said.
