Boys golf: Arlington, Carmel golfers set pace after in round one of Section 1 tournament
Arlington's Shaun Flaherty and Carmel's Luke O'Grady-Rodgers led the group of golfers in contention after the first round of the Section 1 boys golf tournament Monday.
Flaherty, a senior, held a one-shot advantage after he fired a 2-over-par 72 at Waccabuc Country Club. The senior shot even-par on the back nine to maintain his lead.
O'Grady-Rodgers, a junior who entered the tournament as Section 1's top qualifier based on regular season scoring differential, was alone in second after carding a 73. He also shot a 36 on the back.
They were among nine players in the 60-man field who broke 80 and will enter Wednesday's final round within striking range. A total of 34 golfers made the cut by shooting 85 or better. There were players from 15 different schools, including nine players from Scarsdale and four from John Jay-Cross River.
The top nine finishers based on a two-round cumulative score after Wednesday's round will earn a berth to the NYSPHSAA state championships on June 5-6 at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira. Tee times for Wednesday are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Westchester Country Club's South Course.
