Boys golf: Astoria third in Madras scramble event

Apr. 12—The Astoria boys golf team took third place at the Madras White Buffalo Scramble, held April 7 at Crooked River Ranch in Central Oregon.

Molalla won the team title with a 214 team score, ahead of The Dalles (221), Astoria (239), and four other teams.

The Astoria duo of Dietrich Allen and Jase Junes shot a 77 followed closely by the teams of Ian McHone and Jake O'Conner (80) and Tayden Cole and Ben Murdoch (81).

Molalla was led by sophomore Massimo Cereghino and his partner, who shot a six-under par 65 on the par 71 course, mostly on Cereghino's ball.

The Dalles — a 5A state tournament team last year — had two teams that shot one-under par 70.

"Our guys are starting to see the value of consistency," said Astoria coach Peter Roscoe. "We are taking this third place finish as a great sign for our future, both this season and in the years ahead. We may not be posting some of the excellent scores of some individuals yet, but we are building a very solid sense of team spirit."

He added, "Our team is still fundamentally young, and solid performances like this develop confidence and excitement, which are the foundation for improvement."

Astoria hosted a Cowapa League dual match with Scappoose Tuesday at the Astoria Golf & Country Club.
