Boys regional roundup: Jacksonville topples Chatham Glenwood in semis

JACKSONVILLE – Zaidyn Jefferies and Deone Salther both fired in four 3-pointers and eight-seed Jacksonville upset Central State Eight Conference rival Chatham Glenwood 64-56 in the semifinals of the Class 3A Jacksonville Regional boys basketball tournament at The Bowl on Wednesday.

Jacksonville, which lost three times during the regular season to Glenwood, found its range from beyond the arc by making 11 3-pointers. The Crimsons went into halftime with a 23-18 lead. Amaree Burries drilled two 3s and had nine points and Jefferies made two from long distance to score eight in the first half.

Jefferies continued his torrid shooting in the third quarter when he knocked down two more 3s and scored nine more points. Salther joined the action with a pair of treys and scored eight in the quarter.

Salther hit two more 3-pointers in the fourth and tallied eight points to finish with 16. Jefferies ended with a game-high 19 and Burries contributed 13. Jacksonville finished the game with a 24-point fourth quarter.

The Crimsons (9-23) play top seed East St. Louis (21-8) in the regional final at 7 p.m. on Friday. East St. Louis walloped No. 9 Taylorville 74-35 in the other semifinal on Wednesday.

Glenwood ended the season 15-16. Mason Marshall made three of his four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and had a team-high 16 points for the Titans. Carson Doran sank three 3s and he and Logan Tomlinson and Josh Jones provided nine points apiece.

EAST ST. LOUIS 74, TAYLORVILLE 35: The Flyers put 11 players into the scoring column, including four in double figures, to advance to Friday’s regional final.

Behind six 3-pointers in the first half, Taylorville trailed East St. Louis 30-27 at halftime. But the Flyers exploded after intermission and outscored the Tornadoes 44-8 to blow the game open.

Robert McCline popped in four 3-pointers and led East St. Louis with 14 points. Macaleab Rich scored 11 and Dainen Rucker and Cameron Boone chipped in 10 apiece.

Drake Howard had all 10 of his points in the first half to pace Taylorville, which finished the season 4-28. Will Bitschenauer added nine in the loss.

CLASS 2A

AT PAYSON SEYMOUR

PAYSON SEYMOUR 41, NEW BERLIN 38: Lane Barker drained the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining and the No. 9-seeded hosts upset No. 2 New Berlin in the regional semifinals.

Payson’s Bryan Dieker and Wyatt Neisen chalked up 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Pretzels, who were ranked No. 7 in the final Class 1A poll by The Associated Press, trailed 38-31 early in the fourth quarter. Gannon Dodd led New Berlin (25-7) with 25 points.

Payson (17-15) advances to the regional final against No. 7 Concord Triopia on Friday at 7 p.m. Triopia also won a 56-53 overtime thriller over No. 3 Griggsville-Perry.

AT NORMAL UNIVERSITY

WILLIAMSVILLE 59, TREMONT 57: Jacob Finley tossed in the go-ahead putback with under five seconds remaining for the Bullets.

Teammate Blake Shoufler’s missed layup attempt found its way to 6-foot-9 Finley for the win. Finley finished with 21 points.

Williamsville previously beat Tremont 75-62 at Dave Root Court in late December.

The No. 3 seed Bullets (24-7) advance to the regional finals against top-seeded host Normal University on Friday at 7 p.m. Normal U-High throttled No. 7 Downs Tri-Valley 62-31.

AT LITCHFIELD

PANA 58, HILLSBORO 55: Devon Peebles mustered three field goals in the fourth quarter and the Panthers withstood fellow South Central Conference opponent Hillsboro down the stretch.

Pana led just 50-49 at the end of the third quarter and Peebles scored six of the team’s eight points in the final stanza to clinch the win.

Peebles totaled 24 points. He converted one 3 and went 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Teammate Max Lynch also carried Pana with 21 points.

Jace Stewart and Will Christian powered the Hiltoppers (16-15) with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Nathan Matoush also reached double figures with 10 points. Each had three treys in the loss.

No. 3 Pana (18-14) advances to the regional final against No. 2 Alton Marquette on Friday at 7 p.m. The Explorers dispatched No. 8 host Litchfield 57-38.

CLASS 1A

AT NOKOMIS

NOKOMIS 56, ST. ELMO/BROWNSTOWN 37: Elijah Aumann scored 14 of his game-high 16 points in the first half and Nokomis quickly dispatched the Eagles with a 38-12 halftime lead.

Aumann also registered eight rebounds and four steals.

Reece Lohman had 10 points, four rebounds and six blocks. Nolan Himes also contributed 10 points while Ryan Eisenbarth had eight points and six rebounds.

No. 4 NHS (27-6) advances to the regional final against top-seeded Altamont on Friday at 7 p.m. Altamont ousted No. 10 Carlyle 62-48.

AT RAYMOND LINCOLNWOOD

RAYMOND LINCOLNWOOD 49, BUNKER HILL 24: Second seed Raymond Lincolnwood got 14 points apiece from Braden Whalen and Brady Schmedeke and advanced to the regional championship game.

Lincolnwood (24-7) will face third-seeded Madison on Friday at 7 p.m. Madison handled No. 7 Hardin Calhoun 78-56 in the semifinals.

Jonah Elvidge chipped in 11 points for the Lancers.

AT LEWISTOWN

MOUNT STERLING BROWN COUNTY 68, MASON CITY ILLINI CENTRAL 59: Illini Central’s surprise regional run came to an end, falling to the fourth-seeded Hornets in the semifinals.

Illini Central, seeded 10th, had upset fifth seed Lewistown 51-45 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Brown County’s Colby Wort had a game-high 24 points and teammate Cole Behymer supplied 22 against the Cougars.

The Hornets play top seed Glasford Illini Bluffs, which defeated No. 6 Delavan 65-34 in the semis.

Keegan Woods and Davis Bard led Illini Central with 14 points each.
