Boys soccer: Seaside rallies past Astoria, 2-1

Oct. 6—After losing by a 7-1 score to Seaside Gulls three weeks earlier, the Astoria boys soccer team found itself leading the Gulls 1-0 with just over 16 minutes remaining in a Clatsop Clash rematch Tuesday night at Broadway Field.

But at the end of the night, the big scoreboard at Broadway had the Gulls winning another match, 2-1.

In a defensive standoff, Astoria's Owen Williams scored on a header in the 63rd minute of the game, and the Fishermen had hopes of winning their first game since 2019, and their first victory over Seaside in eight years.

That seemed to spark the Gulls, who had three shot-on-goal attempts over the next minute after Williams' goal.

Seaside scored on the second attempt, an unassisted shot by junior Kaden Burch from the left side, as he fired the ball past Astoria goalkeeper Salvador Wienecke, who had made several big saves earlier in the game, including a stop on a penalty kick in the first half.

Burch also had the go-ahead goal with just 4:50 left, scoring on a well-placed shot into the lower right of the net.

Williams had two other shot attempts in the second half, both saved by Seaside's Alex Arden.

Since 2015, Seaside holds a 13-0-1 record against Astoria.
