Boys tennis regionals: Holt, Okemos, Fowlerville capture titles

The Holt boys tennis team is headed to the state finals for a second straight season.

The Rams had five flight winners Wednesday while winning a Division 1 regional hosted by Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.

Holt finished with a score of 18 points while repeating as regional champion. Grand Blanc was the runner-up.

Adam Williams was the champion at No. 3 singles for the Rams, who have won back-to-back regional titles for the first time since 1970 and '71.

Holt swept the doubles flights, beating Grand Blanc in the title match in each in straight sets. Andrew Rutter and Cade Greene won at No. 1, while Anderson Threadgould and Mitchell DuBois were the champions at No. 2. Luke Ausel and Riley Lennox won at No. 3 doubles and Thomas Groenewoud and Davin Thelen were first at No. 4.

Eastern also had a flight champion at the regional with Matthew Stevenson taking the title at No. 2 singles in straight sets over Grand Ledge’s Gavin Latchaw. The Quakers' Nicholas Stevenson was the runner-up at No. 1 singles.

DIVISION 2 AT EAST LANSING

Okemos swept the singles and doubles flights Thursday while finishing as the champion at this regional Thursday. The Wolves had 24 points, while host East Lansing was the runner-up with 13 points.

Suchir Nagisetty won his final at No. 1 singles in three sets, while Okemos had its other singles players Alex Zhang (No. 2), Rikhil Rajanikanth (No. 3) and Ben Wei (No. 4) win their title matches in straight sets.

The Wolves were led in doubles by Siddharth Kandukuri and Kai Minamisono who were straight set winners in their final at No. 1. Aswath Karai and Mithran Kannan won at No. 2 doubles, Dhruv Ganguly and Addy Sarda were the champs at No. 3 doubles and David Shi and Izzath Mohamed Rafih took the title at No. 4 doubles for Okemos.

East Lansing’s William Sigdal was the runner-up at No. 3 singles. The Trojans had all four of their doubles flights finish second in John Laxton and Bryce Aho (No. 1), James Knake and JD Hawthorne (No. 2), Grant Pennock and Sacha Karp (No. 3) and Alex Arnold and Henry Mahler No. 4).

DIVISION 3 AT MASON

Boosted by its doubles flights, Fowlerville edged DeWitt to claim the title at this regional Thursday at the Mason Tennis Center. The Gladiators had 13 points, while DeWitt scored 13 to take second. Haslett was third with 12 points and Mason had 10.

Fowlerville took titles at three of the four doubles flights. Dillon Wieas and Griffin Gonzalez won the final in three sets at No. 2 doubles, while the tandems of Mike Hatfield and Ethan Way (No. 3) and Ben Durbin and Grant Wilkinson (No. 4) won their title matches in straight sets. The Gladiators also got a runner-up finish from Alex Jonas and Oliver Farmer at No. 1 doubles.

DeWitt’s lone flight champion was Kaleb Casler and Diego Canales at No. 1 doubles. The Panthers had runner-up finishes at the other three doubles flights and at No. 3 singles.

Haslett dominated singles play with champions at all four flights. Sree Komirisetty (No. 1), Ian Opel (No. 2), Aremis Leung (No. 3) and Andrew Gingras (No. 4) all won their title matches in straight sets.

Mason had runner-up finishes in three singles flight while finishing fourth.

DIVISION 3 AT ADA FOREST HILLS EASTERN

Ionia finished fifth at its regional Wednesday with a total of nine points. The CAAC White champion Bulldogs were led by Sam Eppler, who was the runner-up at No. 1 singles after falling in the final in three sets.
