Boys tennis roundup: Benson/KMS knocks off NLS, 6-1

Apr. 22—NEW LONDON — Going 3-0 in doubles play helped the Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg boys tennis team get past New London-Spicer with a 6-1 victory on Thursday.

At No. 3 doubles, the Braves' duo of Isaac and Alex Carlson got a victory over Sam Gamez and Joe Brouwer, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2.

In singles, Benson/KMS' Alberto Vargas got another three-set win in the No. 3 spot, defeating Jowell Gamez, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (6). Then at No. 4, Logan Schauer won a first-set tiebreaker on the way to beating Austin Okuly, 7-6 (4), 3-6.

The Wildcats' lone win came at No. 2 singles as Jack Barney beat Hunter LeClair 7-5, 6-2.

Benson/KMS heads to Madison on Tuesday to face Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd. NLS heads to a triangular in Fergus Falls on Friday to face Thief River Falls and the host Otters.

The Willmar Cardinals earned a victory over Fergus Falls at No. 3 doubles in their second match of the day at Fergus Falls.

Ninth-grader Ryan Newberg and junior Jonathan Kelpe beat Fergus Falls' Matt Pajari and Christian Reed 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 to give Willmar its single point.

Willmar head coach Forrest Rice said he moved up Newberg from the junior varsity after a strong showing in singles against New London-Spicer. It's the first time the two have played together.

"It looked like it worked out pretty solid and I guess I want to keep them there," Rice said.

Willmar plays Friday at Alexandria.

Matt Martinson had a pair of wins for Lac qui Parle Valley in a loss to Milbank at Milbank, South Dakota.

Martinson and partner Gavin Stulz picked up a win at No. 2 doubles over Milbank's Gregory Brabow and Charles Whitesett, 10-9 (7-3). Then at No. 6 singles, Martinson beat Daniel Shelstad 10-6.

Jackson Buer also got a win for LQPV/D-B, beating Benett Street at No. 1 singles, 10-3.
