Monroe County Region Boys Track & Field Honor Roll: School records fall

Summerfield's Nathan Herrmann competes in the high hurdles during the Division 4 Regional Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Webberville.

Nathan Herrmann wasn't much of a hurdler going into his first year at Summerfield High School.

Herrmann only envisioned himself as a sprinter. That's all he wanted to be.

"When he first came out his freshman year, he didn't want to run the hurdles," Summerfield coach Jamie LaRocca said. "He very plainly told me that he wasn't a hurdler and didn't want to run them."

Herrmann relented his junior year when the Bulldogs' need became too great. With a small roster, LaRocca needed to maximize the talents of his best athletes. He asked Herrmann and Roman Iott to run the hurdles.

"They said they would do whatever it takes to help the team," LaRocca said. "He turned around and ran them and had the best time we had all year. That opened the door for him."

Herrmann quickly became one of the top hurdlers in the state but doing so required him to sacrifice the sprint events.

"They're back to back," Summerfield assistant coach Kelly Thompson said. "So if you do the 100, you'd have to turn right around and do the hurdles."

Despite the challenge, Herrmann and a select few other leaders on the team were asked to give even a little more to the team this year. Summerfield's roster had only 15 runners for the track events.

Herrmann returned to his sprinting roots with a full-time role in the 200-meter dash. He also dabbled a couple times in the 100.

It was clear he had never lost his edge.

Herrmann posted the Monroe County Region's fastest time in all three of his individual events this spring. Two of those times came at the MITCA Team State Meet, where he ran :22.51 in the 200 and :15.32 in the 110 hurdles. He also posted a Region-leading :39.17 in the 300 hurdles during Regionals.

To top it off, Herrmann posted a personal best :11.56 in the 100. Despite only running the event twice this year, that time was 13th best in the Region.

Herrmann's times in the 200 and the 300 hurdles both broke school records.

The accomplishments were a perfect end to Herrmann's career.

"It's his senior year and I don't think he's doing any track in college, so he was excited to end his last year on a high note," Thompson said. "He had a great season."

He wasn't the only athlete to break records this season.

Jefferson picked up records from Alex Mansfield in the shot-put (60-7.25) and discus (175-6), Carter McCalister in the 3,200 (9:27.73), and the school's 3,200 relay team of Von Wiggins, Isaac Merkel, Blake Schroeder and McCalister (8:06.16).

Micah Scheffer reached 22-10.5 to set a new Bedford mark in the long jump, while the Mules' 400 relay finished :43.97 to climb to the top of the all-time list.

Other school records came from Erie Mason's Jackson Ansel (1:57.20 in the 800), Dundee's Cole Hubbell (149-9 in the discus), New Boston Huron's 400 relay (:43.67), and a pair of of Whiteford relay teams: the 1,600 relay (3:31.50) and 3,200 relay (8:33.70).

A full listing of the top athletes in this year's track and field season follows.

The top five times in each event are the season-best times for each athlete recorded in an official meet. Relays are one per school. The times are from results submitted to www.athletic.net.
