Boys weightlifting state champions lead Tremendous 10 poll

Three state weightlifting champions head a talented list of nominess for this week's Tremendous 10 poll that also includes first-time district champions in tennis and clutch hitters in baseball.

In last week's poll, Lake Gibson softball player Brayden Seymour edged George Jenkins tennis player Nikolas Kumria by 24 votes. Seymoure finished with 38.7 percent of the vote, and Kumria finished with 37.9 percent.

Rounding out the top 10 are Auburndale's McKenna Battilla, George Jenkins' Rey Hernandez, George Jenkins' Bo Seymour, Auburndale's Gavin Chastain, Lake Wales' Trent Grotjan, Lakeland's Larry Jones and Haines City's Gael Guzman.

Here are this week's nominees:

Auburndale junior Gavin Chastain won the 139-pound division in the Olympic competition and finished second in the Traditional competition at the 2023 FHSAA Class 2A Boys Weightlifting Meet at the RP Funding Center.

Lakeland senior Larry Jones won the 238-pound division in Traditional at the 2023 FHSAA Class 3A Boys Weightlifting Meet at the RP Funding Center.

Haines City senior Nashon Paul won the 139-pound division in Olympic and finished fifth in Traditional at the 2023 FHSAA Class 3A Boys Weightlifting at the RP Funding Center.

Lake Wales sophomore Anna Conroy (softball) pitched a four-hitter and allowed just one hit in the Highlanders' 3-1 victory over Bartow. For the season, she is 7-1.

Lakeland Christian junor Colby Brewington (baseball) hit a pinch-hit, two-run double to drive in the winning runs in the Vikings' 7-5 victory over McKeel in the Andrew McCutchen Bracket championship game of the Polk County Baseball Tournament. For the season, he is batting .370 with six doubles, two home runs and 21 RBIs.

McKeel junior Hayden Testerman (baseball) batted .417 with three doubles and five RBIs as the Wildcats finished runners-up in the Andrew McCutchen bracket of the Polk County Baseball Tournament. For the season, he is batting .349 with 18 RBIs.

Victory Christian's Janius Taylor (boys track and field) set a school record by running 22.212 to finish second in the George Jenkins Senior Night Track and Field Meet. He also finished second in the 100. On Friday, he won the 100 adn 200 at the Saints Invitational at Trinity Prep.

George Jenkins senior Horiam Santiago (baseball) batted .333 (3 for 9) with a double and five RBIs to help Jenkins win the Chris Sale Bracket of the Polk County Baseball Tournament.

Auburndale freshman McKenna Battilla (girls tennis) won her first district title at No. 1 singles at the Class 3A, District 6 girls tennis tournament. She also won at No. 1 doubles with her sister Peyton to qualify for the state tournament in both events.

George Jenkins sophomore Nikolas Kumbria (boys tennis) won his first district title at the Class 4A, District 6 boys tennis tournament. With the victory, he qualified for the state tournament.
