BPRD investigating shooting death of juvenile escapee
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– An 18-year-old who has been on the run from juvenile detention since Saturday, Nov. 25, was shot and killed on Saturday, Feb. 10.
On that date, Baton Rouge Police responded to a shooting on the 2600 block of Washington Avenue.
BRPD determined that is where David Atkins, 18, was shot to death around 11:50 a.m.
“We have been aware that a lot of juveniles have been involved in some of these incidents,” Sgt. Darren Ahmed Jr., Baton Rouge Police Public Information Officer said.

Atkins was on the run after escaping the East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Detention Center two months ago. However, Saturday’s shooting led detectives to multiple suspects in his death.
“After a few days of investigations, homicide detectives were led to make the arrests on three individuals, one adult and two juveniles,” Ahmed said. We’re steady looking at the 21st century policing, technology and techniques. Our new chief of police and our mayor is collaborating with other law enforcement agencies, as well as partners in the community to continue developing better ways to keep our streets safe.”
Baton Rouge Police, Sgt. Darren Ahmed Jr. said 19-year-old, Travelle Burris, and two juveniles are now in custody for the death of Atkins.
Authorities do believe robbery was the motive for this shooting. Sgt. Ahmed said all three suspects are being charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and illegal use of a weapon.
The two juveniles involved will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Detention Center. Ahmed said the Baton Rouge Police Department is doing everything it can to protect the community.
“We ask that they continue to help us in solving some of these incidents. Everybody is going to be concerned. But we can assure you, will give you our very best efforts in policing the city streets of Baton Rouge,” Sgt. Ahmed said.
Police still cannot say if the suspects involved in Atkins death knew each other.
