Brad Sherman, a pastor and chair of the Iowa County Republicans, has secured his party's nomination for Iowa House District 91, emerging from a primary election field of six candidates.
That means he will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot against Elle Wyant, the lone Democrat to run in Tuesday's primary election.
The two first-time candidates are vying to represent a new district covering all of Iowa County and portions of Johnson. Created as a result of 2020 census redistricting, House District 91 includes the communities of Marengo, Ladora, Williamsburg, Millersburg, Parnell, North English, Oxford and Swisher, among others.
Sherman received 55.5% of the vote in Tuesday's election, or 1,436 votes total.
In Iowa County alone, he received 61%; in Johnson, 47.2%.
Sherman, 67, lives in Williamsburg and is the pastor of the Solid Rock Church in Coralville. He believes the outcome of the Nov. 3, 2020, general election "was the result of massive fraud and cheating," according to his campaign website.
Wyant, of Marengo, received 1,480 votes in the Democratic primary. She is an LGBTQ activist and salesperson with UPS Cargo.
Also on the Republican primary ballot were candidates John George, Adam Grier, Devon Hodgeman, Skylar Limkemann and Matt McAreavy.
Grier came in second, with 359 votes or 13.9% across both counties.
