Bradford man dies after Schuyler County crash; may have suffered prior medical emergency

A Steuben County man is dead following a single-vehicle crash last week in the Schuyler County Town of Hector.

Deputies from the Schuyler County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash Jan. 12 on state Route 79 in Hector.

An investigation showed Jerry Barnard, 64, of Bradford, was westbound on state Route 79 near the intersection with state Route 414, when his vehicle left the roadway and overturned, the sheriff's office said.

Barnard was taken to Schuyler Hospital and then transferred to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. He died there Jan. 14.

Bernard, a 1977 graduate of Bradford Central School, served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1983, according to his obituary.

He worked for the Tyrone Highway Department for 36 years, the obituary stated.

The investigation indicated Barnard suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash.

The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Watkins Glen Police Department, Burdett Fire Department and Schuyler Emergency Medical Services.
