Golf news: HCC holds title tourney; Rogers aces; linksters shoot age

Derek Willman transformed the snarling Hillcrest Country Club course into a compliant vitality during last weekend’s men’s club championship tourney safari.

Willman, a former Dewey High student-athlete, emerged in the top spot by winning the Championship Flight. Homer Lichtenwalter finished as flight runner-up. Willman also seized the HCC Fall Brawl

Capturing the consolation (stroke) title were Shawn Barker and Mike Brownell, in a tie.

Heath Potter also proved to be one of the hotter warriors on the weekend on his way to capturing the First Flight top spot. Peter Emmott landed in the runner-up position. In the consolation (stroke) scoring, Matt Rumsey claimed first, followed by Mike Carpenter.

Paul Venamon was all in the Second Flight to rise to the apex of the leaderboard, followed by Bob Fraser, who powered into second place. Chad Nightingale and Steve Casper tied for the consolation (stroke) kudos.

THIRD FLIGHT: Champion — Tony Sterk. Runner-up — Jerome Longacre. Consolation (stroke) — Danny Ferguson and Dwayne Huddleston.

FOURTH FLIGHT: Champion — Trey Soto. Runner-up — Mike Moore. Consolation (stroke) champion — Randy Lawrence. Consolation runner-up — Chad Cox.

FIFTH FLIGHT: Champion — Matt Bretz. Runner-up — Gary Wood. Consolation (stroke) champion — Kevin Lynch. Consolation runner-up — Scott Farmer.

SIXTH FLIGHT: Champion — Bob Pomeroy. Runner-up — John Olivier. Consolation (stroke) champion — Josh Malloy. Consolation runner-up — Dale Summerlin.

HOLE IN ONE

Garrett Rogers didn’t roll a lucky seven, but his seven-iron proved to have the right magic in batting him a hole-in-one last week at Adams Municipal Golf Course.

Rogers used his heptade blade to launch the ball off the tee box 155 yards to the cup on No. 12.

Witnessing the neat feat were Zane Rogers, Matt Bourland and Cale Perdue.

AGE BUSTERS

Wendell Price and Ben Lewis each proved last week they’re not getting older — just better. Well, at least when it comes to golf.

The local seniors both shot better at Adams Golf Course than their age — Price, 73, conquered the course with 70, and Lewis, 87, carved out a strong showing at 86.
