Braintree concert series renamed to honor late Recreation Director Nelson Chin

BRAINTREE – The summer concert series at Sunset Lake will have a new name starting next year.

The performances will now be called "The Nelson Chin Summer Concert Series" in honor of the town's late recreation director, Mayor Charles Kokoros announced Tuesday at the final 2022 concert.

The mayor felt it was a "more than appropriate way" to honor Chin.

"He never missed a concert and could always be seen with the biggest smile on his face while he listened to the music and spent time talking with residents," Kokoros recalled.

He thanked Light Commissioner James Regan for the idea. The Braintree Electric Light Department sponsors the series.

Regan said he is honored to have played a role in the decision.

"I believe in doing so that we enshrine (Chin's) love of our community and its traditions," Regan said.

Long active in the town's youth sports leagues, Chin served as the president of Braintree Youth Soccer for eight years. He was named the town's recreation director in 2012.

Chin died in 2020 at the age of 66.

The Braintree Rotary Club, of which Chin was a member, dedicated a memorial bench to Chin outside the Thayer Public Library.

The concert series runs from July to August and features bands and performers from around the region.
