MARSHFIELD − The Levitate Music and Arts Festival has announced its lineup for this year's three-day event in Marshfield, giving music lovers plenty to look forward to this summer.

Brandi Carlile, the Trey Anastasio Band and Stick Figure will headline the festival, which is scheduled for Friday, July 7, through Sunday, July 9, at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

Singer-songwriter Carlile, whose music spans the rock, country and Americana genres, will play Levitate for the first time. A nine-time Grammy Award winner, including three victories at the 2023 ceremony last week, Carlile also performed at Gov. Maura Healey's inauguration in January.

Last summer, as the closing act of the Newport Folk Festival, Carlile made headlines when legend Joni Mitchell joined her onstage for her first full live set since the early 2000s.

Anastasio, co-founder and lead singer of the iconic jam band Phish, will return to Marshfield after headlining the 2018 festival.

Stick Figure, a reggae band founded on the South Shore in 2006, played the inaugural festival in 2013 and has continued to play annually as its star has risen. Other artists and bands scheduled to perform include Goose, Rebelution, Ziggy Marley, Ripe and more.

Levitate festival and store celebrate milestone anniversaries

2023 is a banner year for Levitate. The Marshfield surf and skate shop marks two decades in operation, and the festival, which began as a one-day 10th anniversary celebration of the shop, will also hit double digits in age.

"It's humbling to make it to the 10-year mark of the festival and to 20 years of Levitate," said Levitate co-founder Dan Hassett. "We’re especially proud that the values around community, creativity and connectedness to nature have only deepened through the years, and we’re grateful to fans and community who have helped shape the event to be what is today."

More than 18,000 people attended the third day of the 2022 Levitate Music Festival to watch bands including Dirty Heads at the Marshfield Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 10, 2022.

The Levitate Music and Arts Festival now attracts tens of thousands to Marshfield each July with major acts, relaxed summer vibes and a local, creative spirit.

"We’re excited to use this milestone to dig into our roots and expand our arts and mural programming, partner with more local vendors than ever, double our kids programs and expand our greening efforts," Hassett said.

Levitate has cemented a place in the New England community

In addition to the annual festival, the Levitate brand includes the restaurant/bar Rexicana Surf Cantina and Levitate Backyard, an outdoor music venue, both expansions of the flagship Marshfield store; a touring fall festival, Flannel Jam; seasonal pop-ups on Nantucket and at Derby Street Shops in Hingham; surfing, skating and creative summer camps; and a clothing brand for men, women and children.

“I couldn’t be prouder of what Levitate has become,” said Levitate co-founder and artistic director Jess Hassett. “The lineup is full of amazing female artists including Brandi Carlile, Lucius, Celisse and Melt. Pro skater Nora Vasconcellos will be exhibiting her incredible skills and our arts and mural program will feature a bigger and more  diverse group of brilliant artists than ever before. It was thrilling to design the poster this year knowing how far Levitate has come and how the community has been behind it and has made what Levitate is today.”
