Brandt Martin, Makayla Charles win Barker Honda Athletes of the Week contest

Central Lafourche boys’ soccer player Brandt Martin and Vandebilt Catholic girls’ basketball player Makayla Charles won the Barker Honda Athletes of the Week contest presented by The Courier and Daily Comet on Friday.

Both athletes won an online fan vote from Jan. 17-20 on houmatoday.com and dailycomet.com.

Martin won the male contest after he had three goals in a 8-0 win over Thibodaux on Jan. 11.

Houma Christian School soccer player Matt Waddell was second in the male contest voting, and Terrebonne basketball player Rhiange Smith was third.

Charles won the female contest after she had 36 points and 18 rebounds in a 51-42 win over South Lafourche on Jan. 11.

Central Lafourche soccer player Kenzi Pertuit was second in the female contest voting, and Covenant Christian Academy soccer player Mallory Dupre was third.

Area athletes from all 13 high schools in The Courier/Daily Comet’s coverage area are eligible for player of the week.

The players are nominated based on athletic achievements and winners will receive a framed certificate.
