Brandy Clark Reclaims Her Power in ‘Dear Insecurity’ Video

Nashville-based country star Brandy Clark is in the director’s chair of life in the video for “Dear Insecurity,” her plaintive ballad about nagging self-doubt. Off of the out singer/songwriter’s 2023 self-titled album, produced by Brandi Carlile, “Dear Insecurity” features Carlile on vocals with Clark. Acclaimed visual storyteller Trey Fanjoy — who’s directed about 150 videos for artists including Taylor Swift, Steven Tyler, Keith Urban, Tanya Tucker’s Carlile-produced “Bring My Flowers Now” — helmed the video, which tells the story of various people struggling to believe in themselves.

“I think this video brings this song to life better and bigger than I could have imagined. Trey really had an amazing vision and executed it so well. We all have insecurities and I really feel like this video and all of the characters in it show such a great cross-section of all of us,” Clark said in a release.

The video begins with a teen girl zeroing in on her social media profile picture before examining her features in the bathroom mirror. Other characters grappling with doubt in the video include a drag queen, a woman trying on clothes, and a kid lifting weights. Eventually, Clark turns up and stares insecurity in the face.

“I’ll never find a way to get you gone / Wish I could find a way to know you’re wrong, you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Clark sings with Carlile singing harmony. “You’re careless, and you’re cruel, and, oh, you’re mindless / Maybe you could try a little kindness /
Instead of hurtin’ me (instead of hurtin’ me).”

Currently on tour, Clark is set to make her headline debut at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium on Oct. 25 with special guest SistaStrings.
