Brandywine Valley SPCA's Mega Adoption Event to be held Dec. 9 and 10. Here's what to know

Humans aren’t the only ones hoping for a Christmas miracle, and that’s why the Brandywine Valley SPCA is back this year with its Mega Adoption Event, helping shelter pets find their furever homes just in time for the holidays.

Whether you’re looking for a companion for your beloved family dog or you’re tired of hearing the kids beg for a kitten for Christmas, any reason to adopt a pet from the shelter is a good reason. To add to the holiday cheer already upon us, plenty of adoptable animals are coming to a location near you, and it might put you on the naughty list if you don’t take advantage of this opportunity.

Seriously, who doesn’t want to see a tail-wagging box or a meowing gift bag under the tree this year? (Note: Make sure any potential recipients outside your own household are prepared for the responsibility of a new pet.)

Mega Adoption Event details

The Brandywine Valley SPCA will be hosting a Mega Adoption Event on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10, 2023, where nearly 2,500 animals will be available for $35 each across 16 participating locations, 15 of which are located in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

In partnership with Petco Love, BOBS from Skechers and Discover, the Brandywine Valley SPCA has teamed up with several shelters throughout Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland to find adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens homes.

The Mega Adoption Event has found homes for more than 13,000 pets since 2016, and this year’s 11th installment hopes to add to that total.

The event on Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10, will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at participating locations across Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Out of all those animals, there’s bound to be a playful kitten or a lazy large dog that fits your needs. Looking for a grouchy senior pup to be a curmudgeon with? They probably have one of those, too.

For those eager to get their hands on a new pet, a limited number of early access Fast Passes will be available for BVSPCA locations in West Chester, New Castle, Georgetown and the Animal Rescue Center on Dec. 9. Fast Passes are $50 and give up to five family members per one adoption access to the animals at 10 a.m., one hour ahead of general admission.

How to adopt at the event

You must be over the age of 18 and have a valid driver’s license to adopt an animal.

Bring a leash and collar if you plan on adopting a dog or a pet carrier if you are interested in adopting a cat, as all pets will be available to take home on the same day you visit. If you don’t already have these items, they can be purchased at the event. Cat carriers donated by Petco Love will be available for free.

BVSPCA recommends bringing all members of the family, including the four-legged ones, to meet adoptable shelter pets and ensure a good match is made. Outdoor meet-and-greet areas also will be available for use during the event.

Puppies and kittens are a hot commodity, so if you’re looking to adopt a young animal, get to the event as early as possible, BVSPCA advises.
