The Atlanta Braves are off to a hot start for 2023 season following a series win over the Nationals and dominating sweep over the Cardinals.

Now, the team opens up its home schedule in front of one of the best home field advantages in Major League Baseball. The Braves’ tickets became so popular that the team had to stop selling season tickets last month.

Channel 2 sports director Zach Klein and Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell captured all the excitement for Thursday’s home opener from inside Truist Park to fans swarming the Battery on Channel 2 Action News at 5 p.m.

One family even flew hundreds of miles to experience the home opener.

“We have four kids and we live in Austin, Texas and flew all the way in from Austin, Texas to come to opening day,” Brian Wells told Newell.

Wells said he bought the tickets for his family as Christmas gift and and made sure to get some gear as well.

“Spent entirely too much money but they are ready for Braves games. They are going to go back home to Austin and represent,” he said.

Inside the Braves clubhouse, perhaps no player was more excited for the home opener than the 2022 National League Rookie of the Year Michael Harris II.

Harris didn’t make his MLB debut until May last season. He grew up in Henry County and told Channel 2′s Alison Mastrangelo he couldn’t wait to take the field Thursday night in front of the home crowd.

“It’s really special because I grew up a Braves fan and going to all these games. To have my first home opener, it’s pretty special. Only difference now is I’m on the field and they are saying my name now.”
