Breaking down the brackets: MIAA announces high school boys soccer playoff field

The MIAA high school boys soccer state tournament will kick off this week.

Ten 10 teams from Cape Cod made the cut for the postseason. Amongst those 10, four will be hosting playoff games.

In Div. 5, No. 35 Sturgis West will head to No. 30 Bourne in the lone matchup between two Cape teams.

One game will feature two Cape teams in the preliminary round when No. 35 Sturgis West takes on No. 30 Bourne.

The Red Hawks had a good season as they finished 12-2-4. They had two losses to Martha's Vineyard and Brockton. Earlier in the season, they beat Martha's Vineyard and tied Brockton. If they win their prelim matchup, they have top-seeded Needham waiting.

The Clippers had a 9-6-2 regular-season record and will host their preliminary matchup. With a win, they have a tough fifth-seeded Holliston (9-5-2) waiting in next round.

Thanks to a tough schedule, the three-win Whalers earned a pretty solid seed in the tournament. The draw, against perennial contender Cohasset, is a difficult matchup.

No. 30 Bourne - Underdog

The preliminary-round game against Sturgis West should be a good one. A first-round matchup for either side against No. 3 Hampshire Regional will take a big upset.

No. 35 Sturgis West - Underdog

Despite being one of our four teams in the tournament with two or less losses, the Navigators will be on the road all tournament. Those three other teams are seeded in the top six.

No. 37 Monomoy - Underdog

The Sharks won a lot of games in the regular season, so they won’t be an easy out against No. 28 Manchester Essex. The winner of that game will try to pull off a big upset at No. 5 Frontier Regional.
