Breaking update: Officials recount rescue of pilot from plane crash

Kayakers on Beards Creek helped rescue a pilot of a small plane that went off the runway at Lee Airport in Edgewater. Anne Arundel County fire c told 11 News they received 911 calls around 10:25 a.m. Monday for a small plane down in the area of the creek. Macallair said two kayakers braved the icy water and went to the plane to look for any occupants. They pulled the sole occupant, the pilot, onto their kayaks, out of the water until the Department of Natural Resources could take the pilot to shore. The pilot, identified by Maryland State Police as Steve Couchman, was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to fully recover, Macallair said.
