Brentwood Academy's Mensi Stiff named Gatorade Tennessee girls track and field athlete of year

Brentwood Academy junior Mensi Stiff has been named the Gatorade Tennessee girls track and field athlete of the year.

The Gatorade Player of the Year is based on athletic and academic performance as well as exemplary character shown on and off the field. Stiff is now a finalist for Gatorade's national player of the year award, which will be announced in July.

Stiff, an Ole Miss commitment, was also named the Gatorade Tennessee girls track and field athlete of the year as a sophomore.

A six-time state champion, Stiff reclaimed her crowns as the discus and shot put state champion with a throw of 50 feet, 02.00 inches in the shot put and 155-01 in the discus events in May's Division II-AA state championships held at Middle Tennessee State University.

Stiff has also been one of the best nationally in throwing events winning the shot put event at the Nike Outdoor Nationals with a throw of 51-8.25on her final attempt of the competition set a state record and ranked No. 2 nationally among girls prep competitors in 2022.

She also set a state record in the discus with a throw of 162-10 that earned her a second-place finish in the event and the eighth furthest in the country.

Stiff boasts a 3.75 GPA, helps rescue abused horses and nurses them back to health, is a member of the Brentwood Academy Student Ambassador Program and has volunteered at the Pinson Hospital Hospitality House in Nashville in addition to serving as a vacation bible school teacher.

“Mensi has become the most dominant female high school thrower in the history of our state and she’s a national champion,” Brenwood Academy assistant coach Steve Wade in a release. “It’s not just because of her God-given abilities, but also because of the unparalleled sacrifices she has made to train harder than anyone I’ve ever coached.”

Memphis Central junior Jordan Ware was named the state's boys winner.

Ware won a national championship in the 200-meter dash at the Adidas Outdoor Nationals this past season and also earned All-American honors in the 100-meter dash, finishing third with a personal-best time of 10.34 seconds

He swept the 100 and 200-meter dashes and anchored the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays during the Class AAA state championships helping the Warriors set state records in each event and leading them to the team title.
