Brentwood’s special election to fill the open city commission seat created by the death of longtime public servant Regina Smithson has been set for next year.

The term for Smithson, who died on July 23, was set to end in 2025.

The special election is on Jan. 12. The winning candidate will serve the remainder of Smithson’s term on the seven-seat Brentwood City Commission. Candidates must qualify by Dec. 1.

Each of the seven commissioners serves as an elected representative of the entire city for four-year terms. The commissioners appoint the mayor and vice mayor for two-year terms.

Smithson served on the city commission for 30 years and twice served as mayor.
