Brett Kavanaugh impeachment: Warren joins calls for judge's removal over new sex assault allegation, as Trump issues incomprehensible defence

Elizabeth Warren and key progressive groups have called for the start of impeachment hearings against Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh, as fresh allegations of sexual misconduct have been made against the conservative judge.

Soon after Ms Warren publicly called for Mr Kavanaugh's impeachment on Sunday, those demands were met by a rambling defence of the justice from Donald Trump. In a tweet, the president claimed that liberals were attempting to subvert Mr Kavanaugh's judgeship, and compared the situation to the investigations into Russia's efforts to help his campaign during the 2016 election.
