Brevard 2023 FHSAA state wrestling qualifiers show rare feature

There have been unbeaten Brevard County high school wrestlers before.

For example, Muhammed DeReese of Titusville High won the 215-pound championship of Class 2A in 2007, finishing 27-0, and Palm Bay's Caylor Williams went 50-0 in 2009, winning the Class 3A title at 189 pounds.

Two Pirates compete in this weekend's FHSAA state tournament in Kissimmee with perfect records. They are among 48 Brevard County high schoolers competing at Silver Spurs Arena for state medals, including seven girls.

Palm Bay sent the largest local contingent with nine. Seven Heritage and seven Satellite wrestlers qualified. The Pirates and Panthers won regional championships last weekend.

Roman Maldonado of Palm Bay took a 53-0 record into the Class 1A 132-pound weight class, the only unbeaten among 16 on the bracket. His teammate, Nathan Furman, entered the 152 class with a 43-0 mark.

It takes four wins without a loss to win a state championship. One loss can still lead to a medal in the double-elimination event. Semifinals will be Friday at 1:30. Finals are scheduled for 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for each session are $12 at the door, and parking costs $9.

Last year, 15 Brevard County boys won medals at the state event, as did one girl. Follow updates at 321preps.com.
