Volleyball

Viera 3, Lakeland 1

25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17

VIERA — Viera advanced to the region 2-6A final after defeating Lakeland in four sets.

The Hawks opened the game strong and went on to win the first two sets. Lakeland forced a fourth set after winning the third, 25-23.

In the fourth set, Viera regained control of the match and an ace by Sophia Jones won the set and game.

Viera head coach Sarah Wayne said she liked the resilience her team showed in the match along with the leadership they displayed.

"I liked our resilience tonight, and I liked our offense," Wayne said. "I liked our leaders Sydney Williams, Mak Carter, and Mallory Merz. Even when we weren't playing well and we got into spots where we weren't doing very well, they stepped up and did a great job."

Carter had 11 kills and three aces, Merz finished with 27 assists and one ace, and Jones added 17 kills and five aces.

Viera will host the No. 4 seed Oviedo in the region final match on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.

Merritt Island 3, Cypress Creek 1

25-9, 25-20, 22-25, 25-11

The Mustangs defeated Cypress Creek, 3-1, in the region 2-5A semifinal behind Cassie Martin's 23 kills, five blocks and two aces.

Maddie Johnson had nine kills and two aces, Sarilyne Walley had 40 assists and 11 digs, Julianna Dusch added eight aces, and Rylie Loggins finished with 16 digs and two aces for Merritt Island.

Merritt Island will go on the road to play Wesley Chapel on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in the region 2-5A final.

St. John Lutheran 3, Brevard HEAT 0

St. John Lutheran defeated Brevard HEAT in straight sets in the region 2-2A semifinals. Brevard HEAT closes its season with a record of 19-2 and as district 8-2A champions.

Thursday

Cross country

The Satellite High boys cross country team finished second to the the top-ranked team in the southeastern United States on Thursday at the Region 4-3A meet in Boca Raton.

Belen Jesuit took the title, led by individual winner Joshua Ruiz in 15:25.5. Devin Makousky of Rockledge followed at 15:40.0. Andrew Mahorner was the first Scorps runner to finish, fifth overall in 15:52.7.

Rockledge placed third in the boys team standings.

Malinda Underwood won the girls championship with a time of 17:57.6 for the 5,000-meter race. Keira Merrick of Merritt Island, in 18:49.2, placed sixth. Satellite's girls were fourth, followed by the Mustangs and then the Raiders.

Volleyball

Santa Fe 3, Astronaut 0

25-16, 25-14, 25-12

Astronaut's season came to an end after falling to Santa Fe in the region 2-4A semifinals. The No.1 seeded Santa Fe won the game in three sets over the No. 5 War Eagles.

Astronaut finishes the season with a record of 18-6 and as winner of the district 7-4A championship.

Wednesday

Golf

Led by freshman Hannah Hall's 2-over round of 74, Viera's girls golf team defeated Vero Beach by 10 strokes to win the District 8-3A championship on the Dunes Course at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach.

Hall carded a total of six birdies, including five on her front nine of 4-under 32 to lead the Hawks to a team total of 338.

Viera senior Brittany Odic was third overall shooting a round of 82. Junior Vivian Luu shot a 90 and sophomore Margaux Blais shot a 92 for the Hawks.

Volleyball

Merritt Island and Viera advanced to the regional semifinals after winning quarterfinal matches Wednesday night.

The Mustangs extended their season by defeating Lecanto in four sets.

Bella Schwantz had 10 kills, 13 digs, and six aces, Cassie Martin added 13 kills and three blocks, Maddie Johnson had nine kills and seven digs, and Rylie Loggins finished with 13 digs for Merritt Island.

Merritt Island (16-7) will host Cypress Creek (16-7) on Saturday for the region 2-5A semifinals.

The top seeded Viera (19-5) dominated South Lake with a straight set win in the region 2-6A quarterfinals.

Lakeland (20-5) will travel to Viera on Saturday for the semifinal match.

The Titusville High boys and Satellite girls finished at the top Tuesday in Sebastian at the District 6-2A swimming and diving championships.

Elena Rollen and Mackenzie Wyatt of Rockledge both won a pair of events for the second-place Rockledge girls. Elliot Weisel, Eli Rollen and Sebastian Trujillo of Rockledge each won two events for the Rockledge boys, who were also second as a team.

The Rockledge High girls advanced past Space Coast in the District 10 final Tuesday at Merritt Island Shore Lanes, both moving on to the state tournament. Edgewood won the boys final over the Vipers, and both those teams advanced as well.

Edgewood's Ian Harmon bowled games of 232-233-289 and posted a 754 series to lead all boys scorers.

Kaitlyn Knight was the leader of three Vipers among the four highest girls scorers. She turned in games of 234-224-232 for a 690 series.

Girls individual qualifiers were Maya McKay and Alexis Meadows of Titusville. Boys were Merritt Island's Christian Liquori and Saul Van Horn.

Volleyball

Brevard HEAT and Astronaut picked up wins, while Space Coast and Holy Trinity fell in the first round of the state playoffs.

In region 2-4A, two Brevard County teams competed in regional quarterfinal games Tuesday night.

Astronaut (18-5) defeated The Villages Charter, 3-1, to move on to the regional semifinal game. The War Eagles will go the road to face No.1 Santa Fe on Friday.

Space Coast fell to Santa Fe in straight sets in its regional quarterfinal game. The Vipers close their season with a record of 13-6.

Brevard HEAT extended its winning streak to seven after winning its regional quarterfinal match over Faith Christian in three sets.

Brevard HEAT will travel to Ocala to face St. John Lutheran (17-7) in the region 2-2A quarterfinals on Friday.

King's Academy defeated Holy Trinity, 3-1, in the region 2-3A quarterfinals. The Tigers finish the season with a record of 19-7 and as district 6-3A champions.

Bowling

Girls teams from Heritage and Odyssey Charter joined Heritage and Bayside's boys in qualifying for the state tournament at Monday's District 11 tournament hosted by Palm Bay Shore Lanes.

The Heritage girls came back from the consolation bracket to win the team title with back-to-back finals match wins over Odyssey, while the Panthers swept through the boys Baker bracket without a loss.

Nicole Sarko led the Panthers with games of 205-222-189 for a 616 series in qualifying. Bayside's Dominic Gibson-Smith was the top boys individual scorer, with games of 275-231-227 for a 733.

Jennifer Chiarillo and Chloe Wood of Eau Gallie advanced as individual girls qualifiers, along with boys Ian Giguere of West Shore and Victor Nardone of Melbourne.

Cocoa Beach's boys along with two other Brevard County individuals advanced to regional play by virtue of their results in Monday's District 7-1A tournament at Cocoa Beach Country Club.

The Minutemen placed third, while ninth-grader Alexander Bercea the low scorer for the home team. He placed fifth and shot a 71, two strokes in front of teammate Nolan Hyatt.

Edgewood's Asher Joseph (74) placed 10th and earned a regional spot, and Holy Trinity's Cash Luck (79) advanced by winning a playoff on the second hole.
