A local school district is facing criticism in its search for a new superintendent.

On Tuesday, the Brevard County School Board said it plans to consider extending the contract of its interim superintendent. Late last year, the board approved a separation agreement with the outgoing superintendent.

There are now 12 applicants for the job Dr. Mark Mullins left in December. The deadline for applications is this Friday.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Schiller signed on at Brevard Public Schools to help smooth the way for his permanent replacement.

Now, the school board is discussing extending Schiller’s contract until June 30 as they continue the search for a new superintendent.

In a 12-page letter to the board  and the board’s attorney, Schiller advised the school district not to hurry its search, “The BPS board has set an unrealistic timeline to advertise, investigate, interview and select a permanent superintendent, negotiate a contract with its selectee, much less expect someone to relocate and become fully operational in such a short time.”

Schiller’s contract will be discussed at a regular board meeting that begins Tuesday at 5 p.m.
