Brevard County is on track to open up its first medical school.

Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine is heading to Florida Tech campus in Melbourne, and has been in the planning stages for quite some time.

The president of the school told Channel 9 the accreditation process started more than a year ago.

The first proposed class in 2024 will consist of up to 100 students. Burrell has some of its third- and fourth-year students in Florida for clinical rotations.

The plans are to open the Space Coast location on the Florida Tech campus right behind L3Harris Commons. Renovations are underway.
