Here is the Brewers opening-day roster for 2023
Here are the players who made the Milwaukee Brewers' opening-day roster for 2023, with a game March 30 at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs to kick off the season.
Starting pitchers
Corbin Burnes, RHP: The 2021 Cy Young winner posted a 2.94 ERA in 202 innings last year, with 243 strikeouts.
Brandon Woodruff, RHP: Went 13-4 last year and registered 190 strikeouts in 153⅓ innings, with 3.05 ERA.
Eric Lauer, LHP: Took a leap forward last year and finished with a 3.69 ERA in 158⅔ innings.
Freddy Peralta, RHP: Looking to bounce back after injury-shortened 2022 season, where he still posted a 3.58 ERA in 78 innings.
Wade Miley, LHP: Offseason signing was part of 2018 Brewers team that reached seventh game of National League Championship Series.
Relief pitchers
Devin Williams, RHP: All-star changeup specialist last year moved into closer's role with departure of Josh Hader; posted a 1.93 ERA with 15 saves and 96 strikeouts in just 60⅔ innings. Also pitched for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.
Matt Bush, RHP: Allowed six homers in 23 innings after a deadline trade brought him to Milwaukee from Texas but overall posted a 3.47 ERA last year with 74 strikeouts in 59⅔ innings.
Peter Strzelecki, RHP: Undrafted but worked his way up through system and enjoyed a breakout season last year, posting a 2.83 ERA in his first 35 big-league innings.
Hoby Milner, LHP: Racked up 64 strikeouts in 64⅔ innings (making 67 appearances for second-most on the team) last year and posted a 3.76 ERA; he'll be called upon a lot as the team's lone lefty in the bullpen.
Javy Guerra, RHP. A big-leaguer since 2019, the sinker specialist was acquired in the offseason from Tampa Bay and has breakout potential.
Bryse Wilson, RHP. Acquired from Pittsburgh in the offseason, Wilson split time between starting and relieving last year, with a 3.63 ERA coming out of the bullpen.
Joel Payamps, RHP. Part of an offseason trade that also landed catcher William Contreras, Payamps posted a 3.23 ERA last year with Kansas City and Oakland.
Gus Varland, RHP. Rule 5 selection from the Dodgers must stay on the MLB roster all season or be offered back to Los Angeles. Showcased major promise in spring training.
Catchers
William Contreras (right-handed hitter). Perhaps the biggest offseason prize for the Brewers, acquired from the Braves in a three-team trade after an all-star 2022 in which he posted an .860 OPS and hit 20 homers.
Victor Caratini (switch hitter). Veteran backstop posted a .642 OPS last year but delivered some key hits and threw out 15 out of 40 would-be basestealers.
Infielders
Rowdy Tellez (left-handed hitter). Led the team with 35 home runs last year and his .767 OPS is the best among position players returning to the team.
Luis Urías (right-handed hitter). Split time at third base and shortstop last year, and he might see time at second this year, too; belted 17 homers last year with a .739 OPS.
Willy Adames (right-handed hitter). His 31 homers last year were the most for any Brewers shortstop, part of a .756 OPS with a ceiling for even better numbers this year.
Mike Brosseau (right-handed hitter). Reliable pinch-hit option (9 pinch hits last year, including three homers) posted a .762 OPS last year. Will play primarily third base but saw some time at first base and shortstop in 2022.
Luke Voit (right-handed hitter). First baseman signed with the Brewers on a one-year deal and mashed four extra base hits in 40 spring at-bats. Led the league with 22 homers in pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
Owen Miller (right-handed hitter). Wisconsin native made himself indispensable with big spring and versatility to play first base, second base, third base or outfield.
Brice Turang (left-handed hitter). Shortstop prospect will make his Major League debut when he gets into a game; was the team's first-round draft pick in 2018. Likely to see time at second base.
Outfielders
Christian Yelich (left-handed hitter). Posted a .739 OPS last year with 14 homers and a team-leading 99 runs scored, often hitting out of the leadoff spot in the latter part of the year.
Jesse Winker (left-handed hitter). After a tough year in Seattle last year, the Brewers are hoping for a bounceback to his pre-2022 form after acquiring him in a trade for second baseman Kolten Wong. Boasts a career .836 OPS. Will likely serve as designated hitter regularly.
Garrett Mitchell (left-handed hitter). Center fielder still has rookie status after an impressive showing late last year, when he posted an .832 OPS over 68 plate appearances.
Brian Anderson (right-handed hitter). Versatile player was signed in the offseason after playing with Miami for six seasons, likely to open season as the right fielder.
Injured list (don't count against 26-man roster)
Aaron Ashby, LHP: Highly valued rising star hopes to return by mid-May from a shoulder ailment, either in a starting or bullpen role.
Adrian Houser, RHP: After exiting a late spring game with a groin injury, Houser will work his way back to full health and a likely bullpen role after serving as a starter last year.
Tyrone Taylor (right-handed hitter): The center fielder is expected to miss at least the first month of the season after an elbow sprain cost him all of spring training.
Justin Wilson, LHP: Won't be able to pitch until July as he recovers from Tommy John surgery; left-hander was signed to a one-year deal.
