Brewers starter Wade Miley returns to the same ballpark where ... he almost died?

On Wednesday, Wade Miley returned to the home clubhouse at American Family Field where he last roamed in 2018 as a member of the team that went to the seventh game of the National League Championship Series.

It's also apparently the scene of where he … almost died?

Corbin Burnes revealed Wednesday his favorite story about Miley, though it started in a scary place, dating back to Miley's time with that team in 2018.

"My favorite Wade Miley story is when Stephen Vogt saved his life a couple years ago," Burnes said. "He was choking on something in the clubhouse. Vogt got up and gave him the Heimlich and saved his life. (Miley) ran out of the kitchen, ran back in, and Vogter grabbed him and gave him the Heimlich."

Stephen Vogt, another personable clubhouse presence, played for the Brewers in 2017 and missed the entire 2018 season with injury but was with the Brewers and around the team for chunks of the year. You might think Miley would have thanked Vogt … and you'd be right. Sort of.

Miley bought Vogt bags of Lifesavers candy, along with a doctor's costume that he hung in the catcher's locker.

Here's how Miley tells it:

"I went in a little hot on a hamburger, and the next thing you know…" Miley said, adding that he'd taken two quick bites of a burger before jumping up to get something out of his locker.

"I ran in the hallway (out of the kitchen area) and couldn't breathe. Do I go to the training room, which is maybe 40 yards, or do I go right here (back) to the kitchen? And I went back into the kitchen. Vogter came over and gave me the Heimlich, and I'm here to tell about it."

Miley said he does experience throat issues and has to be careful chewing his food. He called choking his "biggest fear."

"The panic definitely set in, for sure," he said. "Thank God somebody grabbed me, I don't know how long you can not breathe for, I don't know the logistics for that. I got him a few gifts the next day and had fun with it."

Ever the good sport, Vogt happily posed for the pictures in the doctor's outfit.

"We made a joke out of something that could have been pretty serious," Miley said. "I don't think it got to the point where I was thinking about dying, but I definitely chew my food up now."

Vogt bounced back from his career-threatening shoulder injury to play five more years in the big leagues, retiring after last season as a member of the Oakland Athletics. He homered in the final at-bat of his career.

Miley was essential to the Brewers that season, posting a 2.57 ERA in 80⅔ innings. He made four postseason starts, participating in a unique gambit in Game 5 of the series when the Brewers pulled Miley after one batter, inserting Brandon Woodruff in an attempt to generate ideal matchups. The Dodgers won the game, 5-2, but Miley started Game 6 and worked 4⅓ innings in an eventual Brewers win.

Miley pitched for the Houston Astros in 2019 and spent two years with the Reds in 2020 and 2021, then the Cubs last year, where he posted a 3.16 ERA in 37 innings.

"I love it here," Miley said of American Family Field. "Driving in this morning, as soon as I get on the interstate, I can see the stadium. I just love this place. It's not in a big city, the city's 10 minutes away. Just something about it I like. Some of the funnest baseball I've been a part of."

"Wade is obviously that veteran presence in the rotation," Burnes said. "He's going to come in and work hard but more than anything, he's a great sounding board for some of the young guys we have coming up. I know Gus Varland has been attached to him pretty closely over the past couple weeks. He's great to have that wealth of knowledge for some of the young guys coming up. Obviously, it's great for me and Woody and Freddy and some of these guys in the rotation to bounce ideas off of. He's been in the league for so long, he's probably faced all these guys a million times. It's good to have that knowledge."
