Brexit news - live: Philip Hammond suggests he could vote to topple Boris Johnson as current ministers step up plan to block no deal

Philip Hammond has suggested he would be willing to vote against the next Conservative government in a vote of no confidence if it pursues a no-deal Brexit.

The chancellor said he would "not exclude anything for the moment" when asked if he would rule out backing an attempt to topple Boris Johnson's government.

His latest comments came as leading Tory Eurosceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg, a supporter of Mr Johnson, said that suspending parliament so that MPs cannot stop the next prime minister forcing through a no-deal Brexit "may have to happen". The leading Tory Eurosceptic said he did not support a lengthy prorogation but that parliament could have to be closed for one or two days.

The admission came as anti-Brexit MPs reportedly mull a plan to ask the Queen to intervene if the next prime minister, expected to be Boris Johnson, tries to prorogue parliament. Tory members have just three days left to vote for who they want to succeed Theresa May.
