A prominent minister has revealed he quit the government to mount a bid to topple Boris Johnson before he can take office.

Sir Alan Duncan resigned from the foreign office ahead of the announcement of the new prime minister on Tuesday as speculation mounted over a possible exodus of pro-EU ministers.

In momentous week in Westminster, voting in the Conservative leadership contest comes to an end at 5pm, while the Liberal Democrats are also expected to announce their new leader.
