Brian Attaway named as new Duncan Police Chief

Nov. 4—The Interim Police Chief will officially take the helm of Duncan Police Department after receiving confirmation he will become DPD's newest Chief of Police.

Interim City Manager Kenzie Wheeler confirmed the announcement of Brian Attaway as Duncan Police Chief on Thursday, Nov. 2. She said Attaway, formerly a Major for the department, took over the position effective Nov. 1. It was announced he was in the Interim Chief position as early as September during a previous promotion ceremony.

"Major Attaway has done an exemplary job during his tenure with the Duncan Police Department and will continue to serve the citizens of the City of Duncan with integrity and professionalism" Wheeler said.

Attaway has called Duncan home for 25 years, although his career in criminal justice began in Lawton in 1998.

Two years later, in 2000, Attaway joined the ranks of Duncan Police Department as a patrol officer. Since then, he has served the department as a Field Training Officer, an Advanced Accident Investigator, a K-9 handler and as a member of the Special Response Team.

He received promotion in 2007 when he became Patrol Sergeant, again in 2009 when he became Patrol Lieutenant, and once more in 2011 when he assumed the rank of Patrol Captain.

While in that position, he was responsible for contracting "the complete remodel of the National Guard Armory that was donated to the City of Duncan and renamed the City of Duncan Criminal Justice Complex," a release states. "This complex is now the main training site for officers, firefighters and emergency management for City of Duncan as well as for numerous agencies in the surrounding area."

At the beginning of this year in January 2023, he then stepped into the role of Major and Assistant Chief of Police, which put him in direct oversight of daily operations.

Now, as Chief, he will "also oversee the operational and capital budgets of the entire department, which includes 51 certified officers, 15 support staff and three animal control officers," according to information from the City of Duncan.

"I am honored to serve in my new role and look forward to continuing to serve the needs of the citizens of Duncan," Attaway said. "A leader is only as good as the people who work for them, and I will strive to be a leader that paves a path for others to follow and helps them also become great leaders."

Attaway commended those who serve in the ranks of DPD and looks forward to leading the department in future days to come.

"We have an excellent group of men and women who serve with the utmost integrity to provide the safety, security and well-being of all our citizens and, while the community entrusts us with an opportunity to serve and protect its citizens, we will continue to give our best while keeping the highest ethical standards to provide services to our community," Attaway said.
