Brian Smith: Fleetwood earns berth in PIAA softball playoffs with win over Middletown

Jun. 4—Kaitlyn Pytleski allowed just four hits and Fleetwood rallied to beat Middletown 3-1 Friday in the District 3 Class 4A third-place game at Lyons to earn a berth in the PIAA Tournament.

The Tigers will open the state playoffs Monday against District 3 champ Beaver (19-0) at Neshannock High School in New Castle at 4 p.m.

It will be the program's first state playoff appearance since 2002.

Pytleski allowed one run on four hits and two walks. She struck out five.

Seventh-seeded Middletown (17-7) took a 1-0 lead in the second.

Fifth-seeded Fleetwood (16-6) scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.

Kylie Krauss went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Ashley Robuck was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Emily Miller knocked in a run for the Tigers. Amaris Torres and Katie Stump also scored for Fleetwood.
