Brick wall surrounded by star scorers: Silver Lake boys lacrosse has recipe to success

KINGSTON – When the Silver Lake High boys lacrosse team fires in one goal after another, there isn't just one person to credit.

Sure, senior Tom Condon gets his share of the spotlight.

Junior Brandan Cavicchi does, too.

But the Lakers boasted six goal-scorers in a 15-11 triumph over Bridgewater-Raynham on Wednesday. The Condon-Cavicchi duo combined for 10 goals, five apiece, and three assists.

“I think we’re just a well-rounded offense," Condon said. "All six guys on our offense can score at any time. We’re fortunate: every day, we focus on shooting."

Silver Lake's offensive unit flipped a switch in the second quarter on Wednesday. The Lakers ended the opening frame with a 5-3 lead. 12 minutes later, Silver Lake enjoyed its halftime breather with a 12-5 cushion in hand.

What happened was a barrage from Condon (three goals), Cavicchi (two goals), senior Chris Broderick and junior Ryan Green. In a matter of 31 seconds, the Lakers rattled off tallies from Cavicchi, Condon and Green.

“We’re fortunate to get a good little run there and it shows how talented this group is, that we can put up goals in bunches like that," said Silver Lake head coach Derek Weckbacher. "It’s fun to watch when we’re playing that way: playing as a team and making the right plays. That second quarter definitely showcased what we do when we’re at our best.”

Oh – the best version of Silver Lake can't be brought up without a mention of senior goalie McKale Cargill, who totaled nine saves on the day.

“Oh my gosh, brick wall,” Weckbacher praised. “McKale has done so much for us the last couple years. We’re so lucky to have him. I know all the other opposing coaches coming in talk about how good our goalie is, that means a lot. He deserves all that recognition. He’s a great kid, he works hard and he’s a really great teammate too, a great leader. We’re fortunate to have a guy like that between the pipes.”

“Right on the crease, (B-R players) told me after the game they were trying to go high because they said the scouting report was that I was good low. I was able to get there, get a little momentum going," Cargill said. "They definitely had some good shooters, but overall thanks to the defense and everything, we were able to come out with a win.”

Before the pull-away second quarter, the Lakers got a head start in momentum as Cavicchi cashed in on a B-R turnover to net his second goal with just five seconds remaining in the first quarter and secure a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Jack Kenny and junior Ryan Solari also scored in the win.

“It would’ve been nice to stop those guys,” B-R head coach Matthew Connolly chuckled. “To play an offense like that, they cut really well off-ball, they have some good dodgers getting their hands free and we have to recognize there are things we have to be better at, defensively. As coaches, we have to make sure we’re getting our defense ready to play a team as good as they are.”

It's no surprise to Weckbacher that his leaders are stuffing the stat sheet at such an impressive clip. Last week, Condon received our Boys Lacrosse Player of the Week nod with a seven goal, three assist display in a 12-11 win over Hanover. He also scored the tying goal in regulation and followed it up with the clincher in overtime.

“Tommy’s been doing that all last year, all this year,” Weckbacher said. “There are times we ask him to clear the ball out for us, there are times we ask him to play defense for us and he can step up and be the best at any of those positions that we need. That’s huge and for a coach, it’s helpful to have guys like that who can do those things for you. I’m lucky.”

Weckbacher estimated that Condon is flirting with 80 points this season, and is well above 100 points for his career.

He hasn't been caught off-guard by Cavicchi's performance, either.

“Brandon’s another guy who knows how to put the ball in the back of the net," Weckbacher said. "He works hard, he scraps and fights for the ground balls to make other plays on top of the great scoring plays he makes.”

Although it was on the wrong end of a game-swinging run, B-R never faltered. The Trojans relished a four-goal game from sophomore Dawson DuBose, who did a bulk of his damage in the second half. DuBose also had a five-goal performance in a triple-overtime loss to King Philip last week.

“Dawson’s really come on the last couple games,” Connolly said. “Everybody keys in on Ryan Breheny, Christian Thornton – you saw Christian facing a shut-off today –  and it’s one of those things Dawson, when he’s getting his opportunities, is burying his shots. It’s a testament to him. He works so hard and he’s just a great kid with such a great attitude. I’m happy to see him doing well and I think he’s going to keep doing it.”

It won't be long until both of these teams will enter the postseason gauntlet. Silver Lake, most recently ranked the 10th-best in Division 2 by the MIAA in its latest rankings, finishes the regular season in North Attleboro next Tuesday at 3:45.

“Hopefully all of these challenges are going to sharpen us and get us ready for the tournament," Weckbacher said. "The experience against these good teams are obviously things we can learn from and grow from and carry into games going forward. It helps playing these tougher teams, learning to see what you’ve got and rising up to these challenges.”

“What makes this team so special is definitely how long we’ve been playing together," added Silver Lake senior defender Brendan Sullivan. "Some of us have been playing for 10-11 years years together and we’ve never given up on each other. We’ve always got each other’s backs. We just want to see ourselves win in our senior year, that’s definitely the goal.”

B-R, No. 23 in Div. 1, also closes out the regular season next Tuesday: at Sandwich, 4:30 start.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve won a game in a tournament and we were just saying to these guys, that kind of win feels different,” Connolly said. “I don’t know how many of these guys have won a tournament game in any sport in their high school careers. So, we have to make sure we’re playing our best.”
