Bride killed by drunk driver, husband seriously injured just minutes after leaving wedding reception

A bride leaving her wedding reception in a golf cart was killed Friday night after being struck by a drunk driver, authorities say.

The incident occurred on the island of Folly Beach, S.C., where Jamie Lee Komoroski was driving her rental car 65 mph on a beach road with a speed limit of 25.

Investigators say she only briefly hit the brakes before slamming into the back of a golf cart that contained a bride, her groom and three others. The bride, Samantha Miller, 34, of Charlotte, N.C., lost her life in the accident, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

Miller had married Aric Hutchinson just hours earlier. Hutchinson reportedly suffered a brain injury and multiple broken bones after the golf cart rolled over several times and was thrown roughly 100 yards.

Hutchinson’s mother, Annette, has made a GoFundMe to help pay for Miller’s funeral as well as her son’s medical bills.

On the fund’s page, she included a photo of the newlyweds celebrating their marriage just before the crash. The page also features an image of Aric recovering in the hospital, where he’s said to be in critical condition.

His mother said that hospital staff handed her a bag with her son’s wedding band, only five hours after Samantha put it on his finger. “Aric has lost the love of his life,” she wrote.

Komoroski, 25, faces a charge of reckless vehicular homicide in addition to three counts of driving under the influence causing death.

She faces up to 25 years in prison for each DUI count and is currently being held in Charleston County jail as of Monday afternoon.
