Bride and Zoom: Doctors Exchange Vows Over Video Call After Pandemic Forces Wedding Cancellation

Two doctors in Durham, North Carolina, were surprised with a not-so-traditional “wedding ceremony” by their colleagues on April 11, after the coronavirus pandemic forced them to cancel their original plans.

Video and images by Duke Health show OB/GYN resident Dr Shelun Tsai and her fiancé Dr Michael Sun, a resident in Duke Psychiatry’s program, exchanging vows over a video call at Duke Birthing Center.

The couple were due to marry on April 11, and colleagues wanted to help commemorate the date for them with a special ceremony.

According to a news release by Duke Health, the “wedding party” designed a tissue paper bouquet and decorated a transportation cart with “just married” signs.

Tsai donned a paper gown and protective mask for the occasion, and a nurse from the Labor and Delivery unit “officiated” the ceremony.

Friends and family even joined in on the call to witness Tsai and Sun’s vows. Credit: Duke Health via Storyful
