Bridge replacement project expected to cause delays near Wingate later this week

Motorists who use South Eagle Valley Road near Wingate should expect traffic delays this week.

A new single-span concrete structure will be placed as part of a bridge replacement project on South Eagle Valley Road (Alternate 220) near Wingate in Centre County on Aug. 19, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said in a press release.

Since work began on the bridge replacement project in June, temporary traffic signals have enforced an alternating traffic pattern across the structure, the release stated. Demolition of the existing half, as well as excavation for placing the new half, began earlier this week. That work is expected to be finished by the end of the day, Aug. 18.

The new box will be placed with a crane, while the contractor of the project manually operates the temporary signals.

“PennDOT anticipates short traffic stoppages while the contractor sets the box and encourages drivers to build extra time into their travel schedules to compensate for these delays,” the release stated. “Once the contractor places the box, the temporary signals will be set to automatic and continue to enforce an alternating traffic pattern until the project is complete. PennDOT anticipates completion in late October.”

The total $908,000 project includes removing the existing bridge, constructing the new sing-span concrete structure, paving, guide rail updates, pavement markings and other construction, according to PennDOT. Nestlerode Contracting Company, Inc. of Lock Haven is the contractor.

The 13-foot long bridge was built in 1925. By replacing it, its rating will improve from poor to good. An average of almost 4,200 vehicles use it each day.
