Bridgerton executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers are making a new Barbie project for Netflix.

Taking to Twitter/X, Netflix announced that the duo behind Bridgerton are on board to produce an exciting new Barbie documentary titled Black Barbie.

Directed by Lagueria Davis, the project is set to tell the story of the first ever Black Barbie doll, specifically focusing on the impact that three Black women working at Mattel had on the evolution of the doll.

"Black Barbie – a new documentary executive produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers and directed by Lagueria Davis – tells the story of the first Black Barbie and the momentous impact three Black women at Mattel had on the evolution of the Barbie brand as we know it. Coming soon to Netflix!" reads the tweet.

It's hardly surprising that Netflix would want to jump on the current Barbie trend given the success of Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie which globally passed the $1 billion mark at the box office not long after its release on July 21.

The movie has since broken a series of records including becoming the highest-grossing film made by a female director. It also became Warner Bros' highest-grossing film in the US.

Previously speaking about the film's success during an interview at the BFI's London Film Festival, Gerwig said: "It’s been incredible" (via Deadline).

"I was invited to go on this journey. Margot Robbie came to me and said do you want to write this. She was the producer and star with David Heyman and Tom Ackerley. They put together this incredible team of people, and the process of making it was such a joy."

"I went around theatres, stood in the back, and turned up the volume if I felt it wasn’t playing at the perfect level. It was the most thrilling thing," she added.
