IN BRIEF: Spiller to speak to GOP Women Thursday

Sep. 30—State Rep. David Spiller (R-68) will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 5 meeting of Cooke County Republican Women.

Spiller, who represents Cooke and 11 other counties (including his native Jacksboro), was one of the House managers who prosecuted Attorney General Ken Paxton's recent impeachment case before the Texas Senate.

Spiller will discuss the 2023 legislative sessions, including an explanation of the Constitutional amendments that will be on the Nov. 7 ballot.

He is a member of the House State Affairs Committee and the Appropriations Committee. He is a member of the Rural Caucus, the Texas Republican Caucus and is Vice-Chair of the Texas Water Caucus.

There will be an opportunity for questions and to visit with Spiller before and after the meeting.

The meeting is open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall of First Christian Church in Gainesville.

Book of John sermon at First Baptist-Gainesville

First Baptist-Gainesville is studying the book of John. This Sunday, Pastor Jeff will be preaching on "Miracles" from John 2:1-12.

The church, located at 308 E. Broadway in downtown Gainesville, offers two services each Sunday morning in the Summit.

The first service is 9-10 a.m. and is contemporary, with coffee and donuts beforehand. The traditional service is 11 a.m.-noon in the Summit.

Sunday School is offered each Sunday from 9-10am. There are classes available for all ages. The children's department on Sunday mornings is led by Kate Clark.

Texas-OU tailgate Oct. 6 at I-35 rest stop

The Texas-OU annual game means tons of travelers on Interstate 35 for the rivalry match.

The Texas Department of Transportation's Travel Information Center, 4901 N. I-35 in Gainesville, will welcome all travelers to stop and take a break Oct. 6.

TxDOT personnel will be on hand 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to play provider travel information and play safety games with visitors for small prizes.

Several state and local agencies, including the Frank Buck Zoo and Lake Ray Roberts State Park, will offer information about local tourism opportunities.

Diabetes class at NTMC

The next Diabetes Education Program at North Texas Medical Center in Gainesville is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 12. The class will meet at noon in the NTMC Board Room and is free

and open to anyone wanting to learn how to control their diabetes and improve their quality of life. The October class will focus on strategies for dealing with sick days and how illness affects blood sugar levels. Depot Day Oct. 14 in downtown Gainesville

The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Depot Day event is back for its 36th year. The event runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, followed by Depot Day After Dark starting at 7 p.m.

The slate includes 80 vendors of all varieties, local entertainment, a kid zone, and an auto show with over 200 vehicles. Straight Tequila Night will take to the stage with favorites from the 90s at 7 p.m. for Depot Day After Dark.

Hocus Pocus Oct. 21 at Farmers Market

The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce will host Movie Night at the Farmers Market Oct. 21 at dusk.

Sponsor Bluebird Services has selected the classic Halloween movie "Hocus Pocus" for the evening's viewing. Families can look forward to a full day of Fall fun when they attend the Downtown Pumpkin Patch, then end the evening watching this free movie.

Those planning to attend should anticipate needing to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating as picnic table space is limited.

Noah's Ark art fundraiser coming in October

Joe Conner is organizing a fundraiser for a Gainesville animal shelter. She and Chad Sykora, the owner of Krootz Brewing Company, are co-hosting an exhibition to benefit Noah's Ark.

The open themed show is open to any adults or students. Artists will enter the show by purchasing a blank 9 x 12-inch canvas. This will serve as the entry fee for the show. The artist must agree to donate their completed artwork to the art show.

Each artist is limited to a total of two entries. Entry fee will be collected via the purchase of the canvases for $10 each. Students (any age from elementary through college) can participate at a discounted entry of $5. All work included in the exhibit will be priced at $25, with proceeds benefiting Noah's Ark Animal Shelter.
