IN BRIEF: Weekend wreck kills OK City woman

Nov. 21—A vehicle lost control on southbound Interstate 35 last weekend, killing one woman and injuring another.

Texas state troopers report that Oklahoma City residents Irene Halstied, 51, and Lanita Brown, 57, crashed just after noon Nov. 18. Their 2005 Kia Rio veered into the median, rolled over and stopped in the northbound lanes, according to the report.

Halstied was declared dead at the scene by Gainesville EMS workers. Brown was transported to a Denton hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

This investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available, according to the report.

Chamber elections next week

It's time to vote for two open seats on the Gainesville Area Chamber Board of Directors. Voting runs online through Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. at https://tinyurl.com/42adyze4.

Nutcracker to feature local ballet students

A group of Cooke County dancers are set to perform in the Festival Ballet of North Central Texas' 36th annual production of The Nutcracker Ballet. The group includes many from Cooke County Ballet Academy here in Gainesville and Creative Arts Center in Muenster.

There will be five performances at the University of North Texas University Theater (RTVF & Performing Arts Building) 1179 Union Circle. The performances are Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 10, noon and 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at festivalballet.net or by calling 940-891-0830.

Candidate filing runs through Dec. 11

The month-long filing period for candidates who wish to appear on the March 5, 2024 Republican Primary Election Ballot begins on Saturday, November 11. Republican candidates for local races are required to submit filing documents and fees or petitions to the Republican County Chairman Chris McNamara.

The filing deadline is Monday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. That is the deadline for the filing to be in the hands of the County Chair; it is not a postmarked-by deadline. Headquarters will be open Dec.11 from 4-6 p.m., to accommodate last-minute filers.
