The Briefing, The Republic's broadcast-style news and politics show, debuts Feb. 26

The Briefing

The Briefing, a weekly broadcast-style news show recorded in The Arizona Republic studio, debuts Monday, Feb. 26.

The show is hosted by reporter Rafael Carranza, who has covered border, immigration and political issues for more than nine years at The Republic, azcentral.com and La Voz Arizona.

Why The Briefing? It's simple. In a consequential and divisive election year, and in a time of both economic growth and economic uncertainty, the show will provide information and clarity in a straightforward way. No spin, no opinion: just the facts.

Journalists at The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com frequently appear on shows on other channels and networks. This is a chance for them to detail their work in our own visual space.

For 15 minutes each week, Carranza will explore news and issues through interviews with other reporters and newsmakers in a fast-paced, easy-to-digest format. The Briefing will publish to azcentral.com and YouTube, where The Republic’s audience has grown to nearly 130,000 followers.

The show will be produced by video strategist Diana Payan and video producer Itzel Rios Soto. Payan has led our visuals team to multiple Emmys, producing three seasons of Beyond The Gridiron. Rios came to The Republic after video production work at Televisa Univision, ProMazo, The Wedge and KJZZ.

Before joining The Republic, Carranza covered the Vatican for MundoFox and ROME REPORTS TV and was a binational broadcast reporter for KGBT-TV in Texas.

The Briefing is just one layer of The Republic's coverage of politics and the 2024 election. The Gaggle is a must-listen for political junkies and people who prefer news delivered by a podcast.
