Local Korean War vets to observe 70th anniversary of armistice

The Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 51 in Mansfield has scheduled two public events next week to mark the 70th anniversary of the armistice signed in 1953 that ended the three-year Korean War, also called by many as the "forgotten war."

The first event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center, 890 W. 4th St. Veterans and the public are invited to attend. Due to limited seating, an RSVP is requested by calling 419-989-0580.

The second event features two free screenings on Saturday, July 29, of the movie "Devotion," a 2022 film based on a 2015 book by Adam Makos. The screenings will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Riedl Hall on the campus of The Ohio State University at Mansfield. At 1:30 p.m. there will be a panel discussion moderated by Professor Joseph Fahey. No reservation is required.

Closings set for sections of Millsboro West Road, South Lascerne Circle

Millsboro West Road, between Ohio 314 and Lexington-Ontario Road in Springfield Township, is closed to through traffic now through Monday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting. Local and emergency traffic is being maintained. The closure is for roadway repairs.

Water main repairs have forced the closure of South Lascerne Circle from South Home Road to North Lascerne Circle. The street is expected to reopen by the end of the workday Monday. In addition, north and southbound traffic has been reduced to a single lane on Lexington Avenue between Cline and Sturges avenues because of water main repairs. The lanes are expected to reopen by Sunday.

First English Lutheran to distribute food to low-income seniors on Tuesday

First English Lutheran Church, 53 Park Avenue West, along with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, offers Senior Boxes on the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Anyone 60 and over who falls into the low-income guidelines can register and pick up a 30-pound box of nonperishable food including two pounds of cheese and a 15-pound box of prepackaged produce. This is a year-round distribution. Age is a qualification, so a current identification card complete with date of birth and proof of income must be provided.

Participants should come to the east side of the church between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to get registered and pick up a Senior Box. There is no cost for the food.

Crestline library to host programs on eclipse, puppets

CRESTLINE — Dan Everly, Lowe Volk Park astronomer, will present a program about next April's solar eclipse at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Crestline Public Library. Crestline will be in the direct path of this event on April 8, 2024. People within a 124-mile-wide band in the state of Ohio will experience a total solar eclipse. Everly will discuss the eclipse and provide safety measures for viewing. Solar glasses will be available.

At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Mr. Puppet visits the Crestline Public Library once again. He brings various puppets sure to bring a smile to all ages.
