New distracted driving law leads to significant decrease in traffic crashes

COLUMBUS — Traffic crashes have significantly decreased in the six months following the enactment of strengthened distracted driving laws in Ohio.

New preliminary data from the Ohio State Highway Patrol shows that distracted driving crashes hit a record low in September 2023 when compared to each month dating back at least to January 2018. Distracted driving crashes peaked in May 2018 with 1,383 crashes as compared to last month's low of 576 crashes.

When comparing the first nine months of 2022 and 2023, there were 1,255 fewer distracted driving crashes this year, a decrease of 16%. Over the same time period, distracted driving fatalities also declined by nearly 25%.

The impact of the new law is also reflected in the total number of overall traffic crashes in Ohio. With the exception of April 2020 when significantly fewer people were traveling due to COVID, September 2023 had the lowest number of overall crashes in nearly six years.

When comparing the first nine months of 2022 and 2023, there were nearly 23,000 fewer overall traffic crashes this year. Traffic fatalities also decreased during this time period with approximately three dozen fewer people killed.

Food free Halloween alternative on Oct. 22

ATTICA — Halloween can be one of the scariest days of the year for parents and children with food allergies. Just one bite of the wrong food can be life threatening. That is why the Wyatt’s Teal Team Foundation created its annual TRUNK or TRINKET, a trick or treat alternative option for families with food allergies. The event raises food allergy awareness and is a completely food and candy free event.

The second annual TRUNK or TRINKET is scheduled for Oct. 22 in the Seneca East Local Schools parking lot at 13343 E. U.S. 224 in Attica. The event will run, rain or shine, from 5 to 7 p.m. and will feature non-food trinkets, music, raffles, contests and more. All participating vehicles will help raise food allergy awareness by offering non-food trinkets and toys.

If you would like to sign up a vehicle as a stop in the TRUNK or TRINKET, email wyattstealteam@gmail.com.
