Electronics collection set for September and October
The Crawford County Solid Waste Management District will host an electronics collection from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 16 and Oct. 28 at the Crawford County Fairgrounds in Bucyrus.
The collections are for Crawford County residents only. Materials accepted at no charge include computers, GPS devices, modems/routers, televisions, CD/DVD/Blu-Ray players, cell phones, ink cartridges/toner, cordless phones, flash drives, keyboards, stereo receivers, copiers and alkaline, NiCd, NiMh, lead acid/lithium ion batteries.
Among the items not accepted are household/bathroom appliances, kitchen electronics/appliances, light bulbs, lamps, smoke detectors, thermostats, fire extinguishers and mercury containing devices.

Bucyrus company wins $1.7M federal contract
WASHINGTON, D.C. — B. C. & G. Weithman Construction of Bucyrus has won a federal contract award for $1,710,900 from the Department of Agriculture Forest Service in Atlanta, Georgia. The contract is for a northern research station in Delaware, Ohio. It's considered an overwintering facility construction project.
DeWine announces $100M to help eliminate dangerous railroad crossings
COLUMBUS — Gov. Mike DeWine has announced the availability of $100 million in funding to help local communities eliminate dangerous railroad crossings.
Ohio has approximately 5,700 railroad grade crossings, which are locations where roadways intersect with railroad tracks. Funding from the new Ohio Rail Crossing Elimination Program will support the work of local communities to engineer construction projects to eliminate these crossings and pay matching funds that are required for additional support from the Federal Railroad Administration.
Railroad grade crossings are both a safety hazard and a barrier to traffic, including emergency vehicles. Since the Federal Railroad Administration began collecting blocked crossing data in late 2019, more than 10,500 reports of blocked crossings in Ohio have been filed.
Municipalities can submit railroad crossing elimination projects to the Ohio Rail Development Commission, which will identify the projects with the best opportunities for federal funding and assist in developing these locations into competitive federal grant applications.
Agencies unite to protect elderly from abuse
COLUMBUS — IRS Criminal Investigation, the Ohio Department of Commerce, and BBB of Central Ohio have united to spotlight scams and intentional abuse targeting seniors as Grandparents Day approaches on Sunday.
The most common types of abuse are physical, emotional, financial and verbal. The National Council on Aging says up to 5 million older Americans are abused yearly, and the annual loss by victims of financial abuse is estimated to be at least $36.5 billion.
Scammers can pose as family members or friends facing dire circumstances, exploiting the grandparent's concern for their loved ones. They may impersonate the victim's grandchildren, fabricating urgent situations and pleading for immediate financial assistance.
Seniors are urged to resist the impulse to act hastily. Verify the situation with other family members and directly contact your loved one using a trusted number or email. Do not use the contact information provided by the caller.
Also, remember that legitimate agencies and businesses never ask for money via wire transfers or gift cards. Report suspected fraud to banks, BBB and to its ScamTracker, and government agencies.
